Social media influencer Deja Foxx entered the Democratic primary for Arizona’s 7th Congressional District, seeking to replace the late Rep. Raul Grijalva (D-AZ). She became the youngest candidate in the five-person race and polled closely behind frontrunner Adelita Grijalva, the congressman’s daughter. However, despite her campaign's efforts, Grijalva soundly defeated Foxx after claiming 65% of the vote.

Foxx said, "This moment calls for more than a politician. You deserve a fighter." She added, "This is more than a campaign. This is a movement. This is a fight for our future."

Foxx aimed for a come-from-behind win, being one of five candidates competing in the primary. Foxx had hoped to emulate New York City progressive Zohran Mamdani’s electoral success.

Grijalva was strongly endorsed by Arizona Democrats Sen. Mark Kelly and Sen. Ruben Gallego. Other Democratic contenders included State Rep. Daniel Hernandez and activist Jose Malvido Jr.

Grijalva said, “This is a victory not for me, but for our community and the progressive movement my dad started in Southern Arizona more than 50 years ago.”

The Democratic Party has faced ongoing division among establishment members and progressives. Foxx, known for having challenged Sen. Jeff Flake on reproductive rights, was backed by David Hogg, the former DNC vice chair.

Hogg campaigned alongside Foxx, going to door-to-door with her. Hogg has repeatedly warned of Democrats' standing as they approach the 2026 midterm elections. He stated, "We have a real challenge ahead of us. We lost voting share with almost every demographic across the board, and despite all that Trump has done, our approvals remain at 27%."
