Rep. Mark Green (R-TN) has resigned from the U.S. House of Representatives, bringing the total to 431 members. The Republican count drops to 218, while Democrats remain at 212, narrowing the GOP majority to six seats. He made the decision to transition to the private sector after voting in support of President Donald Trump’s reconciliation package. Green has served as Chairman of the House Homeland Security (HHS) Committee during his tenure.

Green stated, "It is with a heavy heart that I announce my retirement from Congress. Recently, I was offered an opportunity in the private sector that was too exciting to pass up. As a result, today I notified the Speaker and the House of Representatives that I will resign from Congress as soon as the House votes once again on the reconciliation package."

Green said, "They asked me to deliver on the conservative values and principles we all hold dear, and I did my level best to do so. Along the way, we passed historic tax cuts, worked with Trump to secure the border, and defended innocent life."

Green added, "I am extremely proud of my work as chairman of the Homeland Security Committee, and want to thank my staff, both in my 7th District office, as well as the professional staff on that committee."

Green, proud of his work on tax cuts and border security for Tennessee’s 7th District, postponed retirement to secure passage of Trump’s border initiatives. His final day followed the House’s approval of the legislation.

Green said, "Though I planned to retire at the end of the previous Congress, I stayed to ensure that Trump’s border security measures and priorities make it through Congress."

Green added, "By overseeing the border security portion of the reconciliation package, I have done that. After that, I will retire, and there will be a special election to replace me."

Green has endorsed Matt Van Epps (R-TN), an Army veteran and former Tennessee Department of General Services commissioner, as his successor. Other GOP candidates include Montgomery County Commissioner Jason Knight and state Reps. Jody Barrett and Jay Reedy.
