HBO's John Oliver recaps his Erie visit, Moon Mammoths rebrand on 'Last Week Tonight'

HBO host and comedian John Oliver is now a fan of Erie. It was evident on the July 27 episode of HBO's "Last Week Tonight with John Oliver."

The episode concluded with a recap of his visit to UPMC Park for his participation in a promotional event for the Double-A Erie SeaWolves. The segment included Oliver explaining how the idea of rebranding a Minor League Baseball team came to be and how excited he was that this large idea was made possible in a short amount of time.

John Oliver, center, host of HBO’s "Last Week Tonight with John Oliver," serves as honorary bat boy during the first of four promotional baseball games in Erie on July 19, 2025. The Erie SeaWolves, a Double-A Minor League Baseball team affiliate of the Detroit Tigers, are temporarily rebranding as the Erie Moon Mammoths for four games this year as part of a promotional collaboration with HBO.

It then cut to a premade video where the SeaWolves transformed into the Moon Mammoths and showed how the game went and how the fans reacted.

With a mix of comedy and compliments, the video followed Oliver during his journey through UPMC Park as he took on multiple roles from throwing the first pitch, to serving food to fans to even being a bat boy and more.

Erie faces recognized on HBO

The recap featured SeaWolves Team President Greg Coleman, diver George Moon who inspired Oliver and his team for the rebrand, Erie's John Oliver, from VisitErie, and multiple SeaWolves or Moon Mammoths fans.

Three more Moon Mammoths games this season

At the end of the video, Oliver told Erie fans to "keep their tusks up" in the wake of the Moon Mammoths' loss.

If you weren't able to make it to the first Moon Mammoths game, there will be three other opportunities on Aug. 19, Sept. 12 and Sept. 13. Oliver is not expected to be at any of these games.
