Lincoln Co. Humane Society offering dog training consultations

The humane society located in Merrill has four dogs ready for adoption.

They will offer a free dog training consultation to those who adopt from the Humane Society.

“If you have a teenager that’s going to get their driver’s license, of course, you’re going to invest in driver’s ed and use that to help them learn,” LCHS director Liz Friedenfels said. “And training for your dogs or puppies is the same way.”

Friedenfels said that good training isn’t just important for the dog and owners, but also for the shelter. She estimated it costs $15 dollars daily for her to care for each animal.

“The majority of dogs in shelters nationwide are actually large breed dogs that the owners have had for quite a while but they just can’t handle the behaviors,” she said.

Focused K9 LLC owner Drew Rupp said his goal is “always to keep them in happy relationships and in homes.”

“ Play with your dogs. A game of tug, I don’t even care what you teach, really, but anything you’re doing is going to build that bond and make you more important,” Rupp said.

He also said that training is mostly about teaching the dogs how to properly react.

“It looks like a dog who is maybe just blowing up at a stranger or another dog on the street, but what it really is is a dog who can’t control their emotions. Really, what I’m looking at is how to alter how they feel about things,” Rupp said.

NewsChannel 7 incorrectly stated training was available through the Langlade County Humane Society. That was incorrect. We regret this error.
