The FBI and the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Albany have initiated an investigation into mortgage fraud allegations against New York Attorney General Letitia James. Federal Housing Finance Agency Director William Pulte requested the Justice Department investigate claims that James falsified records. U.S. Attorney John Sarcone III leads the Northern District of New York, where the referral was directed.

James has been accused of designating the Virginia property as her principal residence while serving as attorney general and misrepresenting the number of units in her Brooklyn residence.

Pulte stated, “Ms. James, for both properties listed above, appears to have falsified records in order to meet certain lending requirements and receive favorable loan terms.”

If substantiated, the allegations could lead to wire fraud, mail fraud, bank fraud, and false statements to financial institutions. Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-NY), who represents the district where the investigation is occurring, has called it a vital step toward addressing corruption in New York.

The FBI and the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Albany have not commented on the investigation. James has defended her decisions and claimed the investigation is a political attack.
