North Pole Colorado Santa’s Workshop now open

(CASCADE, Colo.) — In the trees near the small town of Cascade, Colorado, there’s a Christmas wreath hanging on a building. You can also hear Christmas music playing. Now, you may think this is outrageous to hear at this time of the year, since Christmas is still seven months away.

But then, when you see a polar bear and reindeer statue while walking along a path, you will learn that you are at The North Pole Amusement Park in Cascade, which is now open for its season, on Saturday, May 17.

“We are built for families with kids age 12 and younger,” said Austin Lawhorn, the Manager at The North Pole Amusement Park. “That’s our demographic and that’s who we’ve focused on forever.”

Lawhorn has been at the park her whole life as her grandfather helped build the place back in the 1950s before it opened in 1956. It has remained in Lawhorn’s family as the park enters its 69th season of operation. Lawhorn adds it still has a similar feeling from back in the day.

“We restore vintage rides, and we’re a great little mountain amusement park,” Lawhorn said.

From the rowboat rides to the essential Tilt-A-Whirl, there are rides for everyone at The North Pole. But beyond the vintage rides, other attractions keep people engaged, like a more than 100-year-old organ that plays in the park throughout the day. There’s also food, ice cream, and of course Santa Claus, who hangs out and takes pictures while hanging out in southern Colorado.

“I’m a parent myself, and there aren’t a lot of experiences that we can give our kids that it’s almost the exact same today as it was back then,” Lawhorn said.

Since the rides are throwbacks to past carnival attractions, they don’t have modern technology, but folks can find a 60-foot Ferris wheel, which they claim is the highest in the world. FOX21 looked it up on Google and found it to be true based on sheer height, thanks to southern Colorado’s elevation.

It’s all a blast from the past that keeps the community in high spirits, which is what The North Pole is all about. Stephen Clarke has been coming since he was young, now bringing his wife and kids on opening day.

“I’ve come up here since I was a kid now to bring the same kind of thing, it’s going full circle,” Clarke said.

With the season in full swing now, the North Pole will be open all the way through Christmas Eve.
