Tottenham crowned Europa League winners

Tottenham ended their 17-year wait for a trophy as they held on for a 1-0 win over Manchester United in the Europa League final.

On a night of vindication for Ange Postecoglou and jubilation for the Spurs fans celebrating a first European trophy since 1984, Brennan Johnson’s goal just before half-time proved the decisive moment of a scrappy encounter in Bilbao.

The last touch appeared to be off Shaw's arm (which is in keeping with the quality of this game) but Johnson deserves credit for getting in at the front post, which is such a skill of his.

Manchester United have been forced into a significant change of kit for today’s Europa League final against Tottenham.

Ruben Amorim’s side take on Ange Postecoglou’s men in Bilbao, with a lucrative place in next year’s Champions League up for grabs for the winner.

Now, going into the high-stakes affair, Spurs could have a slight psychological advantage over their counterparts, and it all comes down to kit.

Why Mason Mount starts over Alejandro Garnacho

Ruben Amorim has explained his decision to start Mason Mount over Alejandro Garnacho in the Europa League final.

Goals have often been a problem for Amorim’s side this season and the United boss had a key decision to make over the two players starting behind striker Rasmus Hojlund.

With Bruno Fernandes in a deeper role alongside Casemiro, Amad Diallo gets the nod on the right, while Amorim has opted for Mason Mount, who scored twice in the second leg of the semi-final win over Athletic Bilbao, on the other flank.

That means Garnacho has to settle for a place on the bench, though Amorim suggested the winger could still have a key role to play off the bench later in the match.

Just like Spurs, Man United avoided a knockout play-off tie after sealing a top-eight finish in the league phase of the Europa League.

Their run to the final has been drama-filled, particularly the quarter-final win over Lyon where a stunning comeback in extra-time saw them progress.

The semi-final against Athletic Club was a lot more straightforward, winning 7-1 on aggregate.

They had to overturn a first-leg deficit against AZ to progress, beating Eintracht Frankfurt and then Bodo/Glimt in the quarter-final and semi-final respectively.

Will Tottenham or Man United have to qualify for Champions League?

The winner of the final will become the latest Premier League side to book their place in next season’s Champions League.

Liverpool and Arsenal have already done so after wrapping up a top-five finish, and they will be joined by three of Newcastle, Chelsea, Aston Villa, Manchester City and Nottingham Forest.

There will therefore be six Premier League clubs in the competition next season, as a result of the rule that the Europa League winners earn a place in the top tier of European competition.

The Tottenham midfielder is unavailable tonight because of injury and admits missing out has been a bitter pill to swallow.

He said: "I'm gutted, I'm devastated to miss out, I feel like I have had a good European campaign. To get to the final hurdle and not be involved is difficult."

The magnificent San Mames is still sparsely filled but there was a huge roar just as I got up to the press box, as the Spurs players came out to the pitch to have a look around.

Among the last to make their way back to the dressing room were Lucas Bergvall, who is not expected to feature tonight due to an ankle injury, and Djed Spence, looking very dapper in a a dark suit.

Now here come some of the United players, decked out in blue suits and led by the bleach blonde hair of Alejandro Garnacho.

Ange Postecoglou insists 'future is assured'

Ange Postecoglou has said he wants to stay at Tottenham beyond the end of the season, insisting the job is "far from finished".

Postecoglou is widely expected to leave Spurs at the end of the campaign regardless of the result of Wednesday's Europa League final against Manchester United here in Bilbao.

The Australian, who has two years remaining on his contract, has overseen a difficult league campaign, with Spurs in 17th in the league table ahead of hosting Brighton on the final day on Sunday after 21 defeats from 37 matches.

But he could lead the club to a first piece of silverware since 2008 and a first European trophy in 41 years.

Bruno Fernandes will undoubtedly take one of two attacking midfield slots in Ruben Amorim’s usual 3-4-2-1 set-up. That leaves one position up for grabs, and - if Amad Diallo is already included elsewhere in the line-up - two leading candidates: Mason Mount and Alejandro Garnacho.

The Argentine has started the majority of United’s matches this season, including every knock-out match en route to Bilbao, but has notably been benched in each of their last two (admittedly meaningless) league fixtures, while Mount has started each of their last three and proved instrumental in sealing their spot in the final.

The ex-Chelsea playmaker replaced Garnacho in the semi-final second leg, so Amorim will have to decide which of the two considerably different attackers he prefers from the start against Spurs and which he’d like to turn to as a potential game-changer late on.

Predicted Tottenham XI

Pape Matar Sarr is fit after being forced off in Friday's 2-0 defeat to Aston Villa with discomfort in his back and could line up in a midfield three ahead of Rodrigo Bentancur and Yves Bissouma.

Winger Wilson Odobert has played centrally in the last two league matches and is also another option to deputise at the tip of midfield.

Ange Postecoglou, though, used a 4-4-2 system at Villa Park, with Odobert and Mathys Tel up front, which may hint at his plans for United.

With a slight change of system, Richarlison could partner Dominic Solanke in a front two, with Brennan Johnson and fit-again captain Heung-min Son on the wings. Solanke's ability to hold up the ball and bring others into play make him a potentially good fit to drop into the No10 position.

Gary Neville has made his prediction for the Europa League final as Manchester United and Tottenham prepare to face off in Bilbao.

Both clubs have languished firmly in the bottom half of the table for much of the season and currently occupy the two positions above the relegation zone, on course for their worst-ever Premier League seasons.

But their domestic woes will be somewhat forgotten with victory in the Europa League final, as Spurs look to win their first trophy in 17 years, and first European silverware in 41 years.

Ruben Amorim resignation reports before Europa League final

Ruben Amorim had to be convinced not to quit as Manchester United manager, it has been claimed.

As the manager gears up to guide United out at the Europa League final, reports have emerged that the former Sporting manager wanted to hand in his resignation just weeks after his appointment.

ESPN report that Amorim was so overwhelmed by the scale of the job at Old Trafford, he was prepared to walk away from the job in January after a run of just one win in his first eight games.

Amorim made the United hierarchy aware of his concerns, but the likes of chief executive Omar Berrada gave him reassurances of the board’s confidence in him and promised funds to improve the squad in the summer.

And now Amorim has the opportunity to turn a disaster domestic campaign into a season to remember with European success, should they beat a Tottenham side who are similarly struggling.
