MIDLAND, MI – Even on a rainy day, the sweet smell of handmade, fresh and hot doughnuts dipped into a vanilla glaze could cause a smile, and a craving, to wash over anyone.

And that delicious smell is wafting from one of mid-Michigan’s newest food trucks, Lou’s Donut Co.

Owner and co-founder Micah Weaver said the handmade sourdough doughnut recipe has been in his family for generations.

“My great grandma, who was Amish, came up with this recipe and then, as it’s been passed through the generations, we added sourdough to it,” Weaver said. “It’s grown into quite a big brand. This recipe is used in trailers all over the U.S., all in our family.”

Micah Weaver and his uncle, Lou Weaver, founded this business together. Micah Weaver said a love of food has always run deep within their family.

That love of food and an entrepreneurial spirit paired up for Micah Weaver and the light blue food trailer to hit the road in April.

The Lou’s trailer is equipped perfectly for their process. The doughnut dough is mixed, shaped by hand, dropped in the fryer, coated in the sweet glaze and then hung on a rack for the excess icing to drip off.

“We simply decided Michigan needs better doughnuts, and this is a pretty unique product,” Micah Weaver said.

Unlike cake doughnuts, these are light, fluffy and served hot, he said.

Lou’s always offer vanilla glaze and cinnamon sugar doughnuts, plus rotating specialty flavors such as chocolate Heath, blueberry cream and peaches and cream.

“We love serving people fresh doughnuts. I love seeing the smile on people’s faces when they bite into our doughnut,” Micah Weaver said.

Currently, Lou’s Donut Co. can be found in Midland, Mount Pleasant and Clare, but Micah Weaver said customers can expect to see them in Bay City soon.
