With so many storage options out there, it can be tricky to figure out which system is best. Sometimes, it’s a matter of aesthetics, while other times you need something purely functional.

Occasionally, though, the answer is straightforward. If you're looking for a storage system that's sturdy and stackable, there's one pick that's sure to offer exactly what you need: plastic storage bins.

We checked in with a few professional organizers, and they filled us in on when it’s best to opt for plastic bins above all else.

  • Aprille Loney is a professional organizer and founder of Perfectly Organized OKC.
  • Tina Priestly is a professional organizer and the founder of Ready, Set, REFRESH.

According to professional organizer Diane N. Quintana, you can’t beat a heavy duty plastic tub when it comes to storing clothes you don’t need at the moment. This includes everything from off-season apparel to sports uniforms to children’s clothes you want to keep and pass down later.

“Plastic bins are easy to label, easy to carry, and easy to stack,” says Quintana.

To make the most of your plastic bin system, Quintana says it's that first word that's the most important—be sure to always label your bins clearly and correctly so you know where to find it when the time comes.

As professional organizer Aprille Loney points out, parents often opt for fabric bins in children’s rooms and playrooms. These can be great for aesthetics, but plastic bins are usually more durable and easier to clean.

“Keep crayons, markers, and other art supplies contained in plastic bins so they are easy to find and easy for kids to put away,” says Loney.

She also notes that tiny piece toys like Lego or blocks work well in plastic bins, too, often making clean-up much easier.

Tools and Other Garage Items

“Plastic bins are ultimately a sensible, dependable option when you need to shield your possessions from dust, moisture, or any harm,” says Priestly.

If you’re storing tools, off-season patio items, or seasonal decor, she says plastic bins are particularly ideal thanks to their structure and moisture resistance. They’re also great because they’re a stackable solution, allowing you to maximize your vertical space.

Spare Sheets and Towels

If your linen closet is small or non-existent, Quintana says plastic bins are an optimal solution for storing extra sheets and towels.

“I like to store out of season pool towels in a plastic tub,” says Quintana. “They seal well which keeps the moisture out.”

As an added tip, Quintana also suggests placing dryer sheets in with any fabric items you're storing in plastic bins. This helps to keep them smelling fresh for when they’re back in season.

Pantry Items

If you’re looking to overhaul your pantry, Quintana says she prefers plastic storage options because they’re often the easiest and most space-efficient to arrange.

“These plastic containers for food come in lots of sizes and shapes which makes it easy to fit them on pantry shelves,” says Quintana.

She also notes that plastic is great because it’s dense, but it’s not as heavy as glass alternatives.

“Glass containers break more easily, which is most important to consider in bathrooms and kitchens,” she adds.

Priestly agrees, adding that she likes plastic bin for any pantry staples such as grains, snacks, and baking supplies.

“Not only do they keep things neat, but they also allow you to easily see what you have—helping you avoid overbuying while keeping everything within arm’s reach,” says Priestly.
