Sinner on his haunches as Nardi saves a lengthy break point with a forehand winner, but Nardi then nets twice to gift his compatriot an early break.

It’s looking a tad desperate now for the world No 95.

Krejcikova breaks early in second set

Whatever Krejcikova told herself at the break between sets, it seems to have worked, as she races to a speedy hold to love before breaking Eala to 15 with some picture-perfect forehands down the line.

Another double fault is not what she’s after, though, and she finds herself 15-40 down. But some tremendous serving rescues the hold and the defending champ has a healthy lead in the second set.

The crowd are fully behind her and she gives them something to cheer about with a fine ace down the T that the 17th seed can only palm into the net. The defending champion needs to get her mojo back, one set away from a premature exit...

Defending champion Barbora Krejcikova has just about held to stay in this first set, withstanding multiple deuces and set points for her 20-year-old opponent.

Nardi just about avoids a double break deficit but can’t make any headway against the first seed’s booming serve, which is regularly clocking 135mph!

One of the myriad wildcard Brits might just be on his way to something special out on Court 16.

George Loffhagen, the world 293, has impressively won the first set over world No 52 Pedro Martinez - banging down five aces in a 6-2 triumph. They’re in the early stages of the second set.

Defending champion Krejcikova is looking a bit discombobulated out there. She has the chance to break straight back, with neither player comfortable on serve, but another couple of wild errors instead mean Eala holds and is a game away from taking this first set.

Defending champion Barbora Krejcikova is having an erratic start to her Wimbledon title defence. She’s broken again by her young opponent and Eala is in the ascendancy now, painting the lines with some fine winners.

Alexandra Eala breaks defending champion straight back

Alexandra Eala isn’t happy with that and breaks straight back, getting ahead with a lovely drop shot before Barbora Krejcikova double faults at break point down.

The Filipino player backs up her break as Krejcikova sprays two forehands well long. This feels a finely poised encounter so far out on Centre Court.

Plenty of people have left their seats on Court 1 after that first set, unsurprisingly keen to find some shade. In fact, they’ve just moved the roof slightly, to give more people in the stands some cover.

After the shock exit of third seed Jessica Pegula, No 28 Marta Kostyuk suffers a three-set loss to Veronika Erjavec.

Britain's Johannus Monday eliminated by Tommy Paul

No fairytale run for Johannus Monday; the Briton is dumped out in round one, suffering a straight-sets loss to Tommy Paul.

No shame in losing to the 13th seed, though. Paul emerges a 6-4, 6-4, 6-2 winner.

Alex de Minaur is cruising on Court 18. The No 11 men’s seed has taken the second set 6-2 against Roberto Carballes Baena, after achieving the same scoreline in the opening frame.

Meanwhile, Ekaterina Alexandrova – the women’s 18th seed – has booked her place in round two. She overcame Priscilla Hon 6-2, 7-5 on Court 17.

Heather Watson drops second set as Clara Tauson tie goes the distance

Heather Watson holds serve over on Court 12, forcing Clara Tauson to serve for the second set. Tauson leads 5-4 in the frame, with Watson having won the opener 6-2.

And within a few minutes, Tauson wraps up the set! A comfortable hold of serve for the Dane.

This first-round tie will go the distance.
