British No 1 Jack Draper begins his campaign today looking to take the next step in his career and establish himself as a real contender on the grass, though smooth-moving Argentine Sebastian Baez could prove a tricky first round opponent. Novak Djokovic, meanwhile, sets off in pursuit of a 25th grand slam title against Alexandre Muller, with Jannik Sinner, the top seed, opening his proceedings against a fellow Italian in Luca Nardi.

Defending women’s champion Barbora Krejcikova has overcome an injury scare and will be first out on Centre Court, but there will be plenty of attention on her opponent, with Alexandra Eala proving her high potential in recent months having come through the Rafa Nadal Academy. French Open winner Coco Gauff takes on Dayana Yastremska while Iga Swiatek and Jessica Pegula are among the other standout names underway today.

Yesterday, Carlos Alcaraz survived a mighty scare against veteran Fabio Fognini, while there were fewer frights for Emma Raducanu, through in straight sets after a battle of the Brits with youngster Mimi Xu on the hottest opening day of the tournament on record.

Jessica Pegula on her way out of Wimbledon?

12:07 , Harry Latham-Coyle

More strife for Jessica Pegula - Elisabetta Cocciaretto is two games away from the second round after breaking again in the second set! It’s 4-3 with the balls in the hand of the Italian. Well well well.

A scorching cross-court forehand passing shot from Heather Watson is simply too good for Clara Tauson, but a booming ace that claps into the back wall beyond the beaten Brit ensures she consolidates her lead once more.

A hold apiece after that Clara Tauson break leaves the Dane just in front at 2-1 in the second.

Over on Court 2, Jessica Pegula remains in a predicament, unable to force anything against Elisabetta Cocciaretto through six games. She needs to take the second set to remain in the tournament.

Clara Tauson breaks

11:49 , Harry Latham-Coyle

The long break is followed by, well, a break - whatever Clara Tauson was doing in between sets seems to have worked, though Heather Watson’s failure to land a first serve does give her something of a helping hand. Will that be the foothold the powerful Dane needs?

A bit of a worry as Clara Tauson disappears for some time between sets. Heather Watson is out on court and ready to serve - still we wait, though, for the Dane to re-emerge.

Eventually, here she comes. Let us hope that all is ok - you don’t want to be struggling with an ailment or injury in these conditions.

Tommy Paul has taken out the first set 6-4 against Johannus Monday.

Jessica Pegula falls behind

Now then. A grass-court winner for the first time on Saturday, out of Wimbledon on Tuesday? It’s a real stumble out of the blocks from Jessica Pegula, tipped by some as a possible contender after that Bad Homburg Open win but already a set behind to Elisabetta Cocciaretto, who is serving superbly.

Heather Watson races to first set!

Ooh, this is some showing so far from Heather Watson. Broken early in the set, Watson reels off five straight games to snare it 6-2, with her return game particularly impressive. 23rd seed Clara Tauson is in a spot of real bother.

Another Brit keeping their cool is Katie Boulter, peering out from under an umbrella as she watches partner Alex de Minaur play Roberto Carballes Baena over on Court 18. After beating Spanish opposition yesterday in fine fashion, Boulter will be hoping her fiancé can do likewise.

De Minaur is a tricky player to figure out, seemingly always on the cusp of a breakthrough run at the majors but almost invariably finding himself out in the quarter-finals. A breach of Carballes Baena’s serve in game five represents a strong start.

Meanwhile, a break for Heather Watson, really starting to attack the serve of Clara Tauson and nudging her nose very much in front.

Some good hitting from Heather Watson as she holds for the third time with her match against Clara Tauson all on serve five games in. Watson has a towel filled with ice draped around her neck at the change of ends - it’s that sort of day.

Monday, Tuesday, happy days?

11:19 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Another of the Brits out on court early on Tuesday is the inappropriately named Johannus Monday. All of 6-foot-6, the southpaw could prove tricky opposition for 13th seed Tommy Paul, who has been to the last eight of both grand slams so far this year. Monday, from Hull, has had a good 12 months, taking out five World Tennis Tour titles and now making his major main draw debut. It’s 1-apiece in the early going.

Will Heather Watson keep the Brits bouncing?

11:07 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Heather Watson is up first on Court 12, though faces a tough test against Clara Tauson if she is to join the seven Brits already through to round two. In fact, there’ll be plenty of home interest on that court this morning: Dan Evans faces compatriot Jay Clarke at the conclusion of Watson’s efforts.

Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard slams fastest serve in Wimbledon history

10:55 , Harry Latham-Coyle

The so-called “servebots” can be criticised during the grass-court swing, a fast and flat surface lending itself to those power-players who can slam the ball down at serious speed. There is more to Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard’s game than simply serving but the Frenchman really is something to watch with ball in hand - his 153mph serve against Taylor Fritz last night was a record for Wimbledon.

That match is intriguingly poised. The Frenchman looked set to dump out the fifth seed when he took a commanding lead in the fourth-set tie-break, but Fritz battled back to force a decider. You can understand why Mpetshi Perricard did not want the match to continue last night - refreshed and ready for a few more aces, they’ll go again at the conclusion of Jannik Sinner’s encounter with Luca Nardi on Court 1.

Coming up this morning...

10:45 , Harry Latham-Coyle

The fortunes of Jessica Pegula could be intriguing to follow over the next fortnight, the American slightly incongruous at third in the world rankings without a grand slam title to her name. The 31-year-old doesn’t have a great record here, reaching only a single quarter-final so far, but has begun to find her footing on grass and beat Iga Swiatek in straight sets at the Bad Homburg Open on Saturday to secure her first title on the surface.

Can she go deep this year? Elisabetta Cocciaretto, who she beat on her way to the last eight in 2023, is her opening opponent from 11am BST on Court No 2.

Uniformed protesters criticise introduction of AI line calls at Wimbledon

10:30 , Harry Latham-Coyle

A pair of students dressed as line judges have staged a protest outside Wimbledon in response to the decision to replace human officials with artificial intelligence (AI) at the tennis tournament.

Gabriel Paul, 26, from Battersea, and Harry Robson, 27, from Marlow, stood outside the All England Club in south-west London holding placards reading “AI took my job” and “Don’t sideline humans”.

The men, who are graduating this summer, said they wanted to highlight the wider impact of AI on employment and the role of people in sport.

Taylor Fritz blames opponent for Wimbledon curfew controversy after match suspended

10:15 , Luke Baker

Taylor Fritz has explained the controversy around the decision to suspend his first-round match at Wimbledon and has put the responsibility at the feet of his opponent.

Fifth seed Fritz, who successfully defended his Eastbourne title a couple of days before the start of Wimbledon, was locked at two sets apiece with big-serving Frenchman Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard on Monday evening when the decision was taken to suspend the clash and play to a conclusion on Tuesday.

Wimbledon’s famous curfew means that players must be off court by a hard deadline of 11pm although the fact that it was 10.18pm when this Court 1 clash was pulled off highlights the grey area that often exists around these decisions.

Also underway a little later will be Jannik Sinner, who will be hoping for a smoother start to proceedings than that endured by great rival Carlos Alcaraz. The pair’s contrasts really do enrich their contests, and Wimbledon may very much be hoping to see the pair on a collision course for Sunday week for another final humdinger, as Kieran Jackson writes:
