“Mentally, it’s been a whirlwind of a year for Sinner,” Kyrgios says.

“Props to him for getting back and playing some great tennis. This is one of many Wimbledon titles, I assume.

“It’s not easy to go through all of that. It’s everything he’s gone through when he’s on his knees.

“The game plan was executed perfectly, the backhand line and he served great.”

At the end, Jannik Sinner lofted his arms aloft after a victory which must have felt like some time coming. The 23-year-old, in his typical unostentatious manner, crouched down in reflection before heading to his euphoric team in the east stand. Unlike the most devastating of defeats five weeks ago on the red brick of Roland Garros, when three championship points passed in a flash, the Italian had his crowning moment of the season this Sunday evening in south-west London.

No longer bewitched by his adversary, Sinner claimed his first win over Carlos Alcaraz in six attempts and 20 months. The world No 1 had finally triumphed against his biggest foe. Despite dropping the first set here, the Italian kept his composure, stopped Alcaraz’s three-peat quest and 24-win streak in its tracks and prevailed 4-6, 6-4, 6-4, 6-4.

Of course, for some, it is a result with a bitter taste. It would be remiss not to mention Sinner’s three-month doping ban earlier this year, suspiciously timed so he did not miss a major. Some argue, therefore, that Sinner should not even be playing this fortnight in SW19. And they may well be right. But the “inadvertent contamination” of an anabolic steroid was seen by most as purely accidental. A costly mistake, but one in which Sinner’s integrity was rightly not questioned.

What an effort from Alcaraz, side to side, but Sinner had too much. Three championship points coming up.

First serve is out, cries from the crowd, he composes himself, firing the serve out to Alcaraz’s backhand. It’s fizzed back and Sinner can only find the net. One down, two more to come... The umpire pleads with the crowd to respect the players.

It’s a heavy serve down the ‘T’ and Alcaraz can’t get it back, Sinner is stunned, he’s done it.

Alcaraz wins the first point of the game, but Sinner snatches the second with a series of backhands at the net. It’s tense.

OOHHH! The Sinner forehand is wild, it’s way out, Alcaraz’s return was a layup, almost, in the middle of the court.

And another, you can’t believe this, is it the nerves? Two break points for Carlitos!

The second serve is an opportunity but Alcaraz’s forehand is not out of the centre and flops into the net. One break point saved. And the Spaniard cracks on the second, too, that forehand is just too long.

Kyrgios: “Game, set, match? He needed to take one of those two points. Trust me, he's relieved.”

And one more into the net from Alcaraz, game point for Sinner... GAME!

But he crashes a forehand into the net, offering rare respite for Carlitos.

And there’s the trademark forehand volley on the move, brilliant from Alcaraz. Serve and volley in the clutch? You better believe it.

Needless to say, the 15,000 in attendance don’t want this masterpiece to end. And they’re trying to spark Carlos Alcaraz into another spectacular Grand Slam final recovery, cheering to a higher decibel when the Spaniard wins a point.

But Sinner, having lost the first point of that game, holds to 30 with a fortunate dead net cord and he leads 4-2.

The contest is gradually edging away from the defending champion. Sinner is now just two games away from Wimbledon glory.

Alcaraz takes out frustration on new balls

Oof, 139mph, some frustration there, an ace from Alcaraz to start this vital game. Lose, and it’s surely over.

Another unreturned serve, the second serve cranked up to 126mph, he’s mad.

There’s no passion right now, even with the trademark drop shot to move to 40-0. It’s flat. Sinner then wins the next point with a spinning backhand volley. Something needs to change, even if Alcaraz holds here.

But that might not be straightforward, Sinner stepping in with a sliding, backhand down the line. Those legs bending with real torque as he moves through the ball. 40-30.

Deuce, he needs to get out of this game quick, but he can’t, Sinner smells blood.

Sinner with a wild forehand down the line that just drifts long. And then a wayward backhand as Alcaraz drifted to the net. Game. That was dangerous.

Sinner builds lead in fourth set to surge towards Wimbledon crown

An unreturned serve to start, down the ‘T’ and Alcaraz is looking jaded.

Now 30-0, the Italian is ruthless currently. This time the serve comes back, but he moves in with menace, a hop and skip, the backhand on the rise is buried. It’s quite brilliant. He can’t be stopped in this form.

SET! Sinner powers to third set after towering overhead smash

Some nerves for Jannik? A double fault. But he storms back to lead this game. Alcaraz is in the point and guides a fine lob way up into the sky, but the smash is immaculate. Such towering power, what an overhead!

And then the hammered serve, at 133mph down the line, is too much for Carlitos, SET!

It’s all going the Italian’s way now.

It’s a break point for Sinner. The big first serve down the ‘T’ is just out.

Great chance now for Jannik, who hammers a forehand way out wide. Alcaraz gathers, but then slips.

A gasp from the crowd, but Sinner guides a backhand into the empty court. Big concern for the Spaniard, the No 1 seed will serve for a 2-1 lead.

“You can hear him a bit more,” Dan Evans says on TNT Sports, pointing out Alcaraz has more energy at this stage of the match.

“Sinner is going through a bit of a lull right now,” adds Kyrgios.

Majestic from Carlitos, a lob over Sinner on the backhand side and it’s perfect. Sinner just watches, so special.

Oof, 117 mph on his second serve, out wide, touching the line, Jannik Sinner steps up clutch at 30-30. “That’s big balls,” says Kyrgios. “I can’t say anything.”

Then ace out wide, 131mph, outstanding. Four each.

Alcaraz continues to lead in nail-biting third set in Wimbledon final

Alcaraz is starting to find his rhythm, an efficient hold, he leads at 4-3.

So far this set, Sinner with 10 unforced errors to Alcaraz’s four. While the Spaniard is ahead, despite just 10/24 (42%) first serves in.

What a point! These two are something else, Sinner with the ‘tweener at the net, then Alcaraz lifts one high for the Italian to smash. But it’s wide. Glorious point.

Sinner still has game point, and a big first serve brings an ace, we’re level once more.

Alcaraz scrapping in third set without his best tennis

Alcaraz is feeling the strain out there, but he is scrapping on serve. A missed drop shot is followed up by a shuffle to mid-court and a superb forehand to wrong-foot Sinner.

Who can hold their nerve here? A lengthy rally sees Alcaraz stay in it and Sinner pounds a backhand long. And Sinner guides a lazy backhand return into the tramlines, a hold for the Spaniard and remarkably he leads in this third set.

Alcaraz scraps to hold serve against Sinner in third set

This is huge from Sinner, a fast start and he earns two break points immediately in this third set.

But 137mph on his first serve, Carlitos puts one of those away. And a whipped forehand to Sinner’s forehand forces the Italian off balance, it sails back long, deuce.

A Houdini act from Alcaraz, the first serve, at 123mph, down the ‘T’ and Sinner can’t even get the frame to it. What a hold.

That’s more like it from Jannik on the move, he gets the forehand back and then races to the net.

On his backhand he whips it over the net, across court, for the winner, brilliant and one of the finest points he’s played today.

And now another excellent serve, forcing Alcaraz way out wide... A little hop and skip before a thudding backhand across court. Alcaraz is quick, but not quick enough.

That’s too good! Another sublime forehand, this time on the run and whipped with menace over the net. Watch and admire, we’re all square after an hour and a half.

Wimbledon crowd boo spectator after champagne cork interrupts Alcaraz-Sinner final

The crowd on Centre Court booed a fellow spectator during the Wimbledon men’s singles final on Sunday after a champagne cork landed on court, interrupting play briefly.

Jannik Sinner was preparing to serve in the early stages of the second set when a cork shot out from the crowd, landing just behind the world No 1.

Sinner was forced to retreat from his mark and moved the cork away from the court with his racket, before a ball-girl removed the cork off-court.

Alcaraz is struggling on his first serve and a double fault brings up a break point for Sinner. Tension on Centre Court.

Sinner under pressure on serve once more

Dan Evans on TNT Sports: “The Sinner backhand down the line, if he continues to put that into play, the first serve, when he hits it, he's winning a lot of points. Get that percentage up, and he'll take a hell of a lot of beating.”

A rocket of a forehand from Sinner, but Alcaraz gets it back, the volley at the net... No good! A shocking miss and the hands are just not soft enough currently to be effective closer to the net.

Oh, some stress on the face of Sinner, he barks at his box, making a circular motion with his hand. Deuce. A break up and this is what Carlitos can do to you, every game intense on the grass against the two-time champion.

Another champagne cork is popped and makes its way onto the court!

Sinner holds his nerve, clearly irked, to save break point and eventually wins the game to go up 3-1.

"I'm still picking Sinner,” Dan Evans tells TNT Sports. “He played the majority of the tennis in that set, just a bad game.”

“That tends to be how it is,” responds Nick Kyrgios.

Sinner, meanwhile, has cleared his head, carving two break points early on.

And he slips again, Carlitos mixing up range nicely and even bringing the forehand back he can sense the drop shot and the urgency has sent him spiralling.

This time he prevails, Alcaraz goes long, 140mph serve and it wasn’t enough thanks to the world No 1’s majestic return game. Sinner, after all, is the youngest men’s singles player to ever reach four consecutive slam finals (23 years and 318 days).

Serving to stay in the set. His first serve is missing... Sinner survives at 0-15, Alcaraz with a thunderous backhand, it’s just out.

Oooh, a horror from Jannik. Volley at the net, a stutter, then he wraps a forehand around the ball and it clatters off the outside of the head and goes long. 30-30.

Oh no! Sinner slips, the surprise forehand from Alcaraz and the Italian couldn’t hurry to the net, left in a heap. Yikes. Set point coming...

Second serve, yet Alcaraz is unable to get that body serve up and out. Alcaraz cramped up and Sinner found the right serve when he needed it.

The tension is palpable, the double fault coming into play. The serve is not quite right. It’s only 57 percent first serves in (16/28).

Goodness, first set Alcaraz! What a point, it’s magnificent, Sinner bludgeoning the ball, there’s not much more he can do. And Alcaraz grunts, sliding like a clay court artist before Sinner delivers a huge forehand down the line. But it takes him out of the court and Carlitos cushions a backhand into the empty court. SET.

Alcaraz rattles off another game to take lead in ruthless three-game run

Oooh, the big kicker from Alcaraz on second serve, and doesn’t he love that?

It was a weakness in that Sinner break earlier, but now from 2-4 down, he’s back up 5-4.

Magic! Carlos with the fake drop shot sliced deep near the baseline, then the chopped backhand volley across the net... Just makes it.

And a scream from Carlitos, a superb 18-shot rally, immense ball-striking, he’s pumped and now at 15-30, a mini chance.

And now Sinner goes long, 15-40 and a huge chance emerges for the Spaniard. It’s a weak backhand from Sinner, into the net, and King Felipe applauds in the crowd, we’re back on serve.

“When I served well, I had one of the best serves in the world, I’m in the match, I’d be able to beat them both, but over 10 times, they’d have most of them,” Kyrgios says when asked if he could beat Sinner or Alcaraz and how.

Meanwhile, Sinner is controlling the game with his serve, cap on, he’s moving smoothly, quick steps and crunching forehands to Alcaraz’s backhand, which isn’t holding up here. 2-2.
