Kartal not giving her opponent a sniff here. Patient from the baseline and builds a 30-0 lead.

Although she then sends a forehand wide and then misses another forehand for 30-30. Suddenly a sniff...

But the danger is alleviated. Crunched backhand winner down the line and then a lovely point, ending with a forehand whipped beyond a stretching Parry for the hold. She’s one game away...

A much-needed hold for Parry gives her a foothold in this second set. But too little too late?

Kartal 6-4, 4-0 Parry*

This is class from Kartal now. She is playing well but letting her opponent implode and picking up the pieces. Never get in your enemy’s way when they’re making a mistake, as they say.

Her first-serve percentage is high, groundstrokes are deep and Parry appears to have lost all heart here. A hold to love and it’s hard to see a way back from the French star.

*Kartal 6-4, 3-0 Parry - KARTAL BREAKS AGAIN!

Lovely point by Kartal, shifting Parry around and putting away the forehand volley for 15-15. Her opponent then nets forehand and it’s 15-30.

Now two more break points for the Brit. Only needs one! Applause and cheers round No 1 Court as KArtal finds the tramline and Parry’s attempted cross-court drop shot hits the net.

Sonay Kartal has a double break and is in complete control of this match.

Parry has made 25 unforced errors to Kartal’s nine and that tells you the story of this match. The Brit has really played tidily since her slow start.

Parry is chuntering at her box now, in clear dialogue with her coach, trying to find something.

It doesn’t come here as Kartal secures a routine hold to 15, sealed with a nice forehand winner. This next game is huge for Parry.

Parry’s groundstrokes and that devastating forehand in particular, are deserting her here.

She finds the net on multiple occasions and Kartal has two break points in the first game of this second set.

First one is SAVED after a long rally as Parry crushes a backhand winner cross-court. But the second one is taken! Parry goes long with the forehand and Kartal has the early break!

Superb first set from Kartal, who was 3-0 down remember before winning six of the next seven games to snatch it. She’s now only a set away from a first-ever fourth-round appearance at a grand slam.

Huge chance for Kartal here. Can she see this out? Starts well with an unreturned serve and a Parry return that goes long. 30-0 in the blink of an eye.

Kartal is hitting over 70 per cent of first serves so far and she does so again to take control of the point and suddenly, it’s three set points.

A double fault is not the start Parry wanted to this crucial service game but a big serve and a forehand volley help her move 40-30 ahead. Now another double fault! The serve is looking rickety here.

And Kartal forces a break point as Parry shanks a forehand. What a chance for the Brit...

TAKEN! Parry winds up a big forehand and slams it into the net. Sonay Kartal breaks Parry again and will now serve for the set!

Kartal under pressure on her serve again although she builds a 40-30 lead and holds her nerve from the baseline on game point as Parry spoons a forehand long.

This match has been fairly scrappy, with occasional moments of brilliance, as shown by the fact that both players have more unforced errors than winners so far.

Whoever wins this first set won’t care a jot though

*Kartal 3-4 Parry - KARTAL BREAKS BACK

Yes she can! Parry misses another forehand and a slice from Kartal has so much spin on it that it goes under Parry’s racket as she lunges forward. 0-30.

Now a beautiful whipped passing shot from Kartal and it’s three break points! Huge opportunity.

Long rally on the first, trading sliced backhands before Parry’s drop shot and Kartal gets there but her cross-court flick at full stretch juuuust flops wide. First one SAVED.

Big serve, Parry comes forward and Kartal’s passing shot goes wide to SAVE the second break point. And the third is also SAVED - both women love a slice, Kartal brings Parry to the net with a drop shot but then drives her attempted passing shot into the net. Chance gone.

But Kartal brings up another break point from deuce. Fourth time lucky? YES! Parry nets a forehand and Sonay Kartal has broken back in this first set.

Kartal is serving much better now and Parry looking a bit shakier on her groundstrokes, especially the forehand.

A simple hold is sealed with an ace by the Brit, her third of the match. Can she put pressure on her opponent’s serve?

Kartal 1-4 Parry*

WOW! A huge forehand from Parry on the first point of this game and then another for 30-15. It’s such a weapon. That’s her sixth clean forehand winner already...

Kartal forces 30-30 but a serve down the middle from Parry is unreturned and she then tidies up for another hard-earned hold. She’s a couple of games away from this first set.

Better from Kartal as she settles into her serving rhythm A brilliant point at 40-15 as Parry plays superb defence at the net and then drops a winner.

But the Brit sees out the game for a vital hold and a foothold in this match.

Kartal will hope the the old tennis cliche of a break not being worth a damn until you consolidate comes into play here.

She win the first point nicely but Parry settles into a serving rhythm and reels off the next three. A Kartal forehand gives her a sniff at 40-30 and after a few ball-toss issues on the serve, Parry comes to the net to volley and then smash her way to the point. A good hold and this first set is running away from the Brit

Now it’s Kartal’s turn to struggle on serve. A back and forth game with a couple of deuces and Parry brings up a break point with a clever drop shot.

And she takes it. In control of the point, moving the Brit about and a cross-court forehand is too strong. Break of serve early on for Diane Parry.

Osaka goes out to Pavlyuchenko

Naomi Osaka has lost to Anastasia Pavlyuchenko, losing the last two sets to give the Russian the comeback victory.

Thaat one finished 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 in the end.

Underway on No 1 Court and with the support of the British crowd, Kartal puts some pressure on the Parry serve in the very first game of the match.

She forces 30-30 and although Parry thunders a forehand past the Brit to bring up game point, Kartal beautifully constructs the next point and steps forward to thump a forehand winner of her own.

Now it’s a break point to Kartal but SAVED by Parry after a long rally where she moves her foe around the court. The game passes the five-minute mark...

And Parry finally seals it as Kartal nets a return. Good start from the Brit but the Frenchwoman grinds it out

The biggest result yesterday, arguably, was men’s world No 4 – and British No 1 – Jack Draper losing in round two.
