New England Civil War Museum added to Connecticut Freedom Trail
The Connecticut Freedom Trail's newest stop brings to life the stories of those who fought for their own freedom on the front lines, including a soldier who gave 100% while only counting as three fifths of a person.
The Freedom Trail, a collection of historical sites, takes visitors along the journey of emancipation in the state. The New England Civil War Museum's latest exhibit tells the story of Joseph Porter, a union soldier from Vernon who had a little more skin in the game than some of his compatriots.
“You hear about how the white soldiers freed the slaves or the white soldiers fought for equality," said Museum Executive Director Hayden Dan Jr. "But they are entirely missing the concept that the people of color themselves had a way more active role."
Dan and his team worked for years to piece together Porter's life as a soldier in the 29th Connecticut Volunteer Infantry.
In an excerpt from one of his letters, Porter said: “I think I must close with a kiss for you and a little pet, and love to all - receive this from your unworthy son, Joseph Porter."
“Even from 160 years ago, they felt the same emotions, they loved their families,” Dan said.
Porter's story is just one of thousands told on Connecticut's Freedom Trail.
“Through letters and photos, we know who they are. It’s like seeing them through one pane of glass when you want to look through the window,” Dan said.
Each stop is just a piece of a much larger story.
People can check out this new exhibit by visiting the New England Civil War Museum on the second story of Vernon Town Hall, open Saturdays and Sundays. Admission is free.
