One major change is the Mexican government’s crackdown on excessive taxi fees at Cancun International Airport, finally addressing a problem that had long frustrated travelers.

More Transportation Options for Visitors

Beyond regulating taxis, Cancun International Airport has also introduced a low-cost bus option for travelers, with fares starting at just $8. While these added transportation choices are a welcome development, access could become limited, especially around mid-July.

Cancun Issues Travel Warning To Visitors: Avoid Last-Minute Bookings

With June, July, and August being peak months, July 15th stands out as the key date when visitor numbers are expected to spike. According to the Cancun Sun, hotel occupancy rates are already between 81% and 83% for the season.

Officials expect a minimum of 800,000 tourists by mid-July, prompting them to warn travelers against booking accommodations at the last minute. To avoid being left with only limited hotel options, visitors are strongly encouraged to reserve early.

Fewer Discounts as Hotels Fill Up

As occupancy rises, hotels are less willing to offer discounted rates or special deals. Booking in advance not only ensures better availability but often secures lower prices compared to last-minute reservations, particularly at the most popular hotels in the Cancun area.

Record Tourism Growth Across Mexico

Mexico’s tourism boom extends beyond Cancun. The first quarter of 2025 saw 16.2 million passengers traveling through the country—a 2% increase over the same period in 2024 and a 28.5% rise compared to pre-pandemic levels in 2019.

Secretary Rodríguez Zamora credits this growth to improvements in airport infrastructure, which she says have made tourism a driving force for shared prosperity in Mexico. Quintana Roo Governor Mara Lezama has also been praised for her efforts to resolve taxi issues at Cancun Airport, further supporting the region’s success.
