The latest off-road campers, like this Krug Bedrock XT2, not only have heavy-duty winches, lifted suspension setups, and massive knobby tires but solar panels and onboard battery power. Courtesy Image

Widespread adoption of the overlanding craze over the past few years has led to an explosion in wild adventure vehicles, from pop-top trailers decked out in awnings and even pizza ovens, all the way to RVs capable of spending entire lifetimes off the grid. Extreme upgrades across the industry quickly ramped up price tags, not just for heavy-duty winches, lifted suspension setups, and massive knobby tires but also for solar panels and onboard battery power, which are now considered a must. Even digital touchscreen controls, heated indoor-outdoor showers, aluminum and carbon-fiber construction, and fine wood accents seem par for the course these days in off-road campers—all to amplify the luxury lifestyle, of course.

No more restless night of sleeping in a tent pitched on the ground as that leaky air mattress steadily deflates, and no more skipping hot showers or shivering around a tiny camp stove. Instead, with one of these new off-road trailers or campers, escaping city life for the great outdoors no longer means leaving the comforts of home back at home.

All of which only translates to even greater adventures even further off the beaten path. The only choices that remain are how much to spend while speccing out that dream off-road camper or RV and, of course, where on Earth to go exploring.

Austrian camper module manufacturer Krug has eyes on the American overlanding market, and decided to launch the Bedrock XT2 in partnership with Arctic Trucks in Wyoming. Arctic Trucks starts with a Ford F-550 converted to three axles and six wheels, each of which comes shod in 42-inch Continental tires. The chassis also features eight-link air suspension all around that’s controlled by an interior touchscreen, which enables either smoother or firmer driving but also the ability to level out the living module at the campsite or even air up the massive tires easily.

Creature comforts are the name of the game in the Krug Bedrock XT2, from clever storage solutions to light wood panels for the convertible dining table and bed setup. Courtesy Image

Krug’s unique mounting system allows the F-550 ladder frame and camper module to move beneath the module independently, with a V-shaped groove and subframe that flexes to provide stability and reduce wear and tear on componentry. The interior allows for anyone up to 6'5" to stand up comfortably, despite the lack of a “pop-top” roof, which would increase wind noise while reducing insulation against the elements. And creature comforts are the name of the game, from clever storage solutions to light wood panels for the convertible dining table and bed setup. All the accessories feed on 1,400 watts worth of solar panels, which power a 1,980-amp-hour lithium-ion battery pack, all accessible remotely via Starlink Mini and a digital touchscreen control panel.

Best Large Off-Road Trailer: Bruder EXP-8

Bruder’s enormous EXP-8 takes off-road trailer living to a new level. The rig weighs 6,172 pounds or so, depending on accessories, and rides on dual axles with 33-inch tires. An air suspension system with dual remote-reservoir shocks at each wheel allows Bruder to claim the EXP-8 has three times as much usable wheel travel as its nearest competitors. That kind of articulation should help to keep even the toughest trail smooth, while a winch and built-in recovery points mean never worrying about getting stuck.

The interior can sleep up to five people, while a 48-volt electrical system typical of hybrid-electric cars supports a 1,680-watt solar setup and 20-kilowatt-hour battery. The living quarters are fully decked out, too, with a queen bed, full kitchen, a diesel heater, and air conditioning, plus even an available washer/dryer option. The shower even features a door on the inside and outside, for easy washing off or perfect access to the beachside, depending on your adventure.

The new Trekker from 27North doubles down on the recipe of the company’s original Ascender adventure rig. Instead of a Ford, this build starts with a Ram 5500—which means 6.7L Cummins turbodiesel power that Ram rates for 34,000 pounds of towing capacity. 27North then adds a four-inch lift and 40-inch tires to support a camper module built out of carbon-composite with aluminum interior walls and a weatherproof floor, for extreme environments rated at -25 to 125 degrees. Rugged bumpers and skid plates, plus rock sliders and a winch, round out the off-road capability, while on the inside, a full-on king-size bed sits in the shell above the truck’s cab.

Just like the idea of hauling around a king bed, everything on the Trekker goes overboard, including a 3,000-watt inverter for solar and three 310-Ah batteries, 50 gallons of fresh water capacity for the full kitchen, 360-degree exterior lighting, and all the way to a Bluetooth-controlled retractable awning.

Not every adventure rig needs to start with a beefy pickup truck, which explains the growing popularity of Mercedes-Benz’s Sprinter vans among overlanders. Not many vans go bigger than Rogue Vans and the Legends Rally, though, which features a 6.3-inch lift and 33-inch tires beneath flared fenders.

The blue pine wood grain interior creates a welcoming home for extended stays off-road, with a convertible bench-bed at the rear of the cabin, plus a tiled shower and portable cooktop in the kitchen. Power comes from 500 watts of solar, and an optional 47-gallon extended range fuel tank. To keep the luxury experience alive while well off the beaten trail, the Legends Rally sports AC, heat, and a fan, while Starlink connectivity means that home—or the email inbox, for adventuring on the clock—is never too far away.

The Baja Plus from Colorado-based Rossmönster costs nearly half-a-million bucks, but the feature list can easily justify spending house money on an adventure rig. This home on wheels starts life as a Class 5 Ram pickup, which then receives a cab pass-through, super singles, and a ridiculously luxurious pop-top camper that stretches up to an 80-inch ceiling. Teak wood and brilliant lighting keep the interior airy, while nifty touches include in-floor heating and composting toilets.

The Baja Plus should be able to explore Mexico’s famous peninsula with ease, thanks to upgraded suspension, wheels, and tires, plus MaxTrax mounting locations and a 20,000-pound Warn winch. A 1,620-amp-hour LFP battery powered by 760 watts of solar provides power, and the interior can sleep up to six people without feeling cramped thanks to a 35-inch aisle down the center of the cabin. Most impressively, the clever top doesn’t pop open with soft walls, but rather retains the hard-shell exterior to prevent wind and weather intrusion.

Mammoth Overland’s TL Genesis Edition trailer lives up to the name with a tall and upright interior that anyone short of an NBA power forward can walk inside. The cabin features a kitchen and on-demand hot water powered by two 100-watt solar panels and a 400-amp-hour lithium-ion battery, plus a king-size mattress and a modular bunk bed/couch. Riding on 5,200-pound-rated independent suspension from Timbren’s and 33-inch BFGoodrich all-terrain tires, the first run of TL trailers includes an indoor-outdoor passthrough pantry, plumbing for propane, and an indoor shower.

And that’s not to mention the customization possible on the exterior, with mounting for the molle panels, Rotopax cans, a ladder to access the roof, and another rear hitch receiver for hauling around mountain bikes.

The minimalist, modernized teardrop design of Escapod’s Topo2 MTB trailer caters specifically to mountain bikers searching for the perfect trail. Single-piece fiberglass construction keeps the weight low, yet still manages a year-round R9 insulation rating. And the Topo2 MTB rides higher than high with an absurd 23 inches of ground clearance thanks to Freeride independent suspension and clearance for 33-inch General Grabber all-terrain tires.

The galley features a sink, storage for a Yeti cooler, plenty of drawers, and even an integrated bicycle tool kit by Feedback Sports mounted directly into the cabinetry that includes chain breakers and crankset wrenches. The galley is accessed by swinging out the Kuat Piston Ion bike rack, a sturdy enough setup to haul two 80-pound e-bikes. Roof racks allow for additional storage, as well as mounting a retractable awning for some shade after a tough day in the saddle. And thoughtfully, an outdoor shower can rinse off all that trail grime.
