Why do signal failures happen?

But they sometimes fail to work.
One of the most common causes of a signal failure is problems with track circuits and axle counters which are used to detect if a train is in a section.
A track circuit is a little current that flows between the tracks and trains. In order to determine if a section is clear for the following train, an axle counter counts the number of track wheels entering and exiting the section.
