This means that more than 1 in 5 teenage girls in Niger become pregnant each year. The leading causes of teenage pregnancy in Niger include lack of proper parental care, lack of sex education, peer pressure, low education level, and poverty, which leads to early marriage.

The situation is so severe that Niger has a fertility rate of 6.73 children per woman, making it the highest in Africa and the world. Large families are highly valued in Niger's culture, particularly in rural areas where children contribute to household work.

Mali ranks second on this disturbing list, with teen pregnancy rates that mirror the crisis in Niger. Mali, another west African country, comes second after Niger, with a teenage pregnancy rate of 175.44 out of every 1,000 women aged between 15 and 19 years.

The reality for girls in Mali is heartbreaking - most girls in the country are married before 18 years, and ⅓ of them give birth before 19. Sources indicate that the leading causes of early pregnancy in the country include peer influence, coercive sexual relations, early marriage, lack of parental guidance, lack of counselling, lack of affordable education, lack of sexual education, and drug abuse, among others.

Angola: Where Education Gaps Create Teen Pregnancy Crises

Angola's teen pregnancy statistics reveal a devastating pattern that links directly to educational access. According to the world atlas, Angola ranks 3rd among countries with the highest teenage pregnancies, with 166.6 out of 1,000 women aged below 20.

What's particularly alarming is the educational dropout rate that fuels these pregnancies. According to the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), 75% of the girls in Angola have access to primary school education, but only 15.5% of the girls make it to secondary school.

This educational gap creates a perfect storm where a vast percentage of teenage girls remain at home, and the country is likely to experience a surge in teenage pregnancies due to early marriages and early sexual practices by this illiterate teenage population.

Central African Republic: Violence and Poverty Drive Teen Pregnancies

The country's situation is complicated by ongoing conflicts and limited healthcare infrastructure. There are also the added burdens of malnutrition, famine, war and pestilence that are rampant across several countries making the top of this list.

War in particular adds to teenage pregnancy rates due to the sad reality of the invading soldiers who rape local women.

Mozambique's teen pregnancy rates paint a grim picture of the challenges facing young girls in the country. Going on down the line following Niger are Mali (175.4438), Angola (166.6028), Mozambique (142.5334), Guinea (141.6722), Chad (137.173), Malawi (136.972), and Cote d'Ivoire (135.464).

The problem has been getting worse over time, with in Mozambique, in 2015, 46% of girls aged 15 to 19 years were already mothers or pregnant, an increase of 9% between results found on the National Demographic Health Survey in 2011 and National Survey on HIV, Malaria and Reproductive Health (IMASIDA) 2015. The Global Picture: Sub-Saharan Africa's Teen Pregnancy Crisis

The concentration of high teen pregnancy rates in sub-Saharan Africa reveals a regional crisis that demands urgent attention. More than 90% (approximately 12 million births) of such births occur in developing countries, with African countries taking the top ranks.

The regional statistics are sobering - In 2023, while about 10 per cent of adolescent girls and young women in South Asia and Latin America and the Caribbean gave birth before age 18, this percentage more than doubles when considering the regions of sub-Saharan Africa. In both Western and Central Africa and Eastern and Southern Africa, around 25 per cent of adolescent girls and young women during this same period gave birth before age 18.

A study commissioned by the African Committee on the Rights and Welfare of the Child found that one in every five adolescent girls in Africa becomes pregnant before reaching the age of 19.
