EAST RUTHERFORD - Optimism is in the air as the New York Giants report for training camp and the anticipation continues to build for the fourth season with coach Brian Daboll and general manager Joe Schoen in command.

That surely beats last season when the angst and anger of a loyal fan base was expressed by a select few in disgruntled messages pulled by rented planes above MetLife Stadium.

Schoen and Daboll were brought back by ownership despite a three-win campaign last fall during which seemingly nothing went right. Their return comes with an obvious mission to turn the corner and bring some positivity and competitiveness back to the franchise about not only the upcoming season, but the future.

Top storylines

  1. All eyes are on Jaxson Dart: No one is quite sure when - or if - the rookie quarterback from Ole Miss will make his regular season debut. But there's no question that he will garner the most attention this summer. Expect the Giants to challenge Dart in practice and preseason games as much as they can, and it should be fun to watch.
  2. How much does Russell Wilson have left in the tank? The Giants are prepared to find out if the Super Bowl winning quarterback can regain some of the magic that he displayed earlier in his career. Now at 36 years old, Wilson has done and said all the right things since he signed with the Giants. He's pacing to be the starter in Week 1, but that can change if Dart comes of age faster than anticipated. Is Wilson washed? He threw 16 touchdowns and tossed just five interceptions in leading the Steelers to the playoffs last season. If he does that here, they might put Wilson in the Ring of Honor.
  3. Have we set the bar too high for Abdul Carter? Well, considering the rookie edge rusher from Penn State actually had a conversation with Lawrence Taylor about the possibility of wearing No. 56, it's likely the Giants lost any opportunity to downplay his presence and expectations right there and then. Wearing No. 51, Carter has the look of a special player. Everything he does this summer will come with an element of excitement and wonder.
  4. Andrew Thomas and Malik Nabers, the linchpins on offense: The Giants are set to bring back their entire offensive line from last season's opener, and that starts with their star left tackle. Thomas suffered a Lisfranc fracture last October and his absence was glaring. The Giants were calculated and cautious this spring, not just with Thomas but with wide receiver Malik Nabers [toe], the two most valuable players on the offense. The Giants can't win consistently without Thomas and Nabers playing significant roles.
  5. Is this team tough enough and resilient enough to stand up to the pressure? There will be talk of job security for Brian Daboll and Joe Schoen from jump. The NFC East is a beast. The schedule is being talked about as if it will be impossible for these Giants. At some point, the ball will be kicked off and the games will still have to be played. If Schoen and Daboll have changed the locker room, infusing this roster with the right attitude and level of talent, toughness and resiliency must be prioritized from within.
