Lummi Nation officer shot multiple times while trying to help driver after crash

A Lummi Nation Police Officer was shot multiple times early Monday morning while investigating a traffic incident, the Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office reports.

The officer, 37, was shot after approaching a driver whose vehicle had veered off the road into a ditch on the 3200 block of N. Red River Rd. shortly before 1 a.m.

Investigators said that the officer tried to contact the driver, only to have the driver open fire on him, striking him several times.

The suspect fled the scene, but law enforcement said they have arrested a 26-year-old man they believe shot the officer. He has been arrested for attempted murder.

The officer was rushed to receive emergency medical care and has since undergone surgery. Officials said in a press conference that the officer, who has been with the police department for "less than a year," is now in stable condition.

"Today, we faced a horrific incident that has deeply affected our community," said Whatcom County Sheriff Donnell Tanksley. "A brave Lummi Nation Police Officer was shot while performing their duty to protect and serve. The officer received immediate medical attention and we hope for their full recovery."

Sheriff Tanksley emphasized the community's support for the officer and their family during this challenging time. "We are working diligently to investigate this incident to help ensure that justice is served," he said.

He urged community members to unite and support one another, stating, "Violence against law enforcement is an attack on the safety and security of us all. We ask for your prayers and support for the Lummi Nation police officer, Lummi Nation Police Department, and all those who serve to keep us safe."

The investigation is being conducted by the Law Enforcement Mutual Aid Response Team (LEMART), with updates to be provided by the Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office.
