Fire burns Kula Lodge restaurant on Maui

An early morning fire broke out at Kula Lodge and Restaurant on Maui.
KULA (HawaiiNewsNow) - The Maui Fire Department (MFD) responded to a fire at Kula Lodge and Restaurant early Monday morning.
Maui Police Department said a renter staying in one of the rooms reported the fire at 3:19 a.m.
Firefighters said the building was completely engulfed in flames.
Beth Oldenburg sent in video of flames and smoke emanating from a building.
It took firefighters two hours to gain control of the fire.
Kula Lodge Director of Operations JC Aguilar confirmed that the restaurant section of the lodge burned to the ground.
“It’s hard to describe,” said Aguilar. “You see a building that provides living for so many people and has created so many memories for locals and visitors, and it’s gone in a couple of hours. It’s not easy to take.”
Aguilar said no one was inside at the time, but the fire destroyed 80 years of history.
CEO Stephanie Mallek confirmed that the lodge lost power, and six guests from two separate lodges were evacuated.
“The roof [of the restaurant] had been engulfed in flames,” said Mallek. “So, it was very smokey and firefighters were just pouring water on it from all angles.”
In a social media post, Mallek said the fire was contained to the restaurant, and the rest of the property, which includes the lodges and marketplace, were not affected.
Mallek also confirmed no one was hurt.
“We are incredibly grateful to MFD for their quick and thorough response, and we are waiting on the investigation to find out what happened,” she said.
Mallek said the marketplace opened at noon and will resume normal business hours moving forward.
Both lanes of Haleakala Highway between Upper Kimo Drive and Ainakula Road were closed as crews battled the fire.
