Rocky is an undisputed cultural icon. Even if you’ve never seen the movie, you’ve probably heard people quote it or seen them reenact that moment where he raises his arms triumphantly over his head at the top of the Philadelphia Museum of Art stairs. And I guarantee you’ve heard the theme music in a parody or at a sporting event.
But did you know that Sylvester Stallone, who starred in it, also wrote it, and in a surprisingly short period of time? Did you know it was a movie that catapulted an unknown actor into stardom? It looks like insisting on playing the part was a good move for Sly.

I don’t know about you, but I tend to assume that everything is made by machine these days. There are amazing machines out there that can manufacture all sorts of complicated products, so I always think that there’s very little that’s actually made by hand anymore.
But some things still are handmade. For instance, did you know this interesting fact about tennis rackets? Personally, I think it sounds like incredibly tedious work; the people who do it might wish there were machines for it. But it’s cool to think that some things are still done by hand.

#4: Nunc Est Bibendum

We’re all familiar with the Michelin Man. You’ve probably seen him — a bulbous figure made of white tires — dozens of times in your life, and probably never thought much about him. But it turns out he has a long history, as well as a Latin name.
Bibendum comes from Nunc est Bibendum, a quote from Odes by the ancient Roman poet Horace. The phrase means “Now is the time for drinking”; early Michelin ads showed the Michelin Man raising a drink up in a toast and reciting the Horace quote. Man, advertising was really different in the 1800s.

#6: How Many?

#1: Adrian!, #3: Every Tennis Racket Is Unique, #4: Nunc Est Bibendum, #6: How Many?, #7: Day Day?, #9: I Hear That, #10: Perfect Percentages, #12: Train Yourself to Be Happy, #13: Elevated Thinking, #15: A Frisbee Funeral, #16: The Most State, #18: All Tired Out, #19: Life Is Weird, #21: Age of Aquarius, #22: What a Square, #24: A Groundbreaking Speech, #25: The Old Man and the Sea

There are various estimates on this, but according to the United Nations, the population of the world now exceeds 8 billion people. But the population has exploded in recent years; it’s been much lower in past centuries and millennia. So, if I had to guess how many people have ever lived in the world, I would assume that it was high but not incredibly high.
But it turns out that I am 100% wrong! The world has been around for a very long time and a lot of people have lived on it over the years, and that adds up to an astounding 117 billion people over the course of human history. What would have been your guess?

#7: Day Day?

#1: Adrian!, #3: Every Tennis Racket Is Unique, #4: Nunc Est Bibendum, #6: How Many?, #7: Day Day?, #9: I Hear That, #10: Perfect Percentages, #12: Train Yourself to Be Happy, #13: Elevated Thinking, #15: A Frisbee Funeral, #16: The Most State, #18: All Tired Out, #19: Life Is Weird, #21: Age of Aquarius, #22: What a Square, #24: A Groundbreaking Speech, #25: The Old Man and the Sea

One of the best-known events in World War II, and in the whole 20th century, is June 6, 1944: the Allied invasion of France, when thousands of Allied troops landed on the beaches of Normandy. It was the beginning of the eventual Allied victory and is commonly known as D-Day. But what does D-Day mean?
There are a few different theories and explanations floating around, but the most commonly accepted one is that the D also stands for “day,” meaning the full name is “Day Day.” Allied commanders, you did a terrific job winning the war. But you really need to work on coming up with better names for things.

#9: I Hear That

#1: Adrian!, #3: Every Tennis Racket Is Unique, #4: Nunc Est Bibendum, #6: How Many?, #7: Day Day?, #9: I Hear That, #10: Perfect Percentages, #12: Train Yourself to Be Happy, #13: Elevated Thinking, #15: A Frisbee Funeral, #16: The Most State, #18: All Tired Out, #19: Life Is Weird, #21: Age of Aquarius, #22: What a Square, #24: A Groundbreaking Speech, #25: The Old Man and the Sea

As someone who spends a lot of time listening to music, making music, and humming under my breath to the immense irritation of anyone in the vicinity, the thought of losing my hearing terrifies me. And I’m probably not the only one. So, this next piece of trivia freaked me out a little.
But now I know something important: it’s possible to do something about that hearing loss; you just have to act quickly! I am very curious about this, though. It implies that some people lose hearing in one ear and don’t bother doing anything about it for a while. How is going to the doctor not the first thing on your to-do list?

#10: Perfect Percentages

#1: Adrian!, #3: Every Tennis Racket Is Unique, #4: Nunc Est Bibendum, #6: How Many?, #7: Day Day?, #9: I Hear That, #10: Perfect Percentages, #12: Train Yourself to Be Happy, #13: Elevated Thinking, #15: A Frisbee Funeral, #16: The Most State, #18: All Tired Out, #19: Life Is Weird, #21: Age of Aquarius, #22: What a Square, #24: A Groundbreaking Speech, #25: The Old Man and the Sea

If you were a kid who didn’t like math class, there’s a chance that you complained at some point, “When am I actually going to use this stuff?” But a lot of us actually use math all the time without thinking about it. For instance, what if something you want is on sale for 20% off, and you need to figure out what it actually means?
Now, unless it’s an easy number like 50% off, a lot of us would pull out our phones and use a calculator app if we need an exact price. But this useful trick could help you do that math in your head! I am definitely going to remember this one and use it to score all the sweet sale items.

#12: Train Yourself to Be Happy

#1: Adrian!, #3: Every Tennis Racket Is Unique, #4: Nunc Est Bibendum, #6: How Many?, #7: Day Day?, #9: I Hear That, #10: Perfect Percentages, #12: Train Yourself to Be Happy, #13: Elevated Thinking, #15: A Frisbee Funeral, #16: The Most State, #18: All Tired Out, #19: Life Is Weird, #21: Age of Aquarius, #22: What a Square, #24: A Groundbreaking Speech, #25: The Old Man and the Sea

I would bet that more has been said on the topic of how to be happy than on most other topics. And that says something about the search for happiness: it’s hard and a lot of people don’t know where to start. We wouldn’t need so many books and blog posts and TikToks on the subject if we actually understood it better.
If you’ve ever wondered how to be happy, you might find this tidbit of information useful. Could you train your body to consider happiness your new default? It’s worth a try, especially if the alternative is your body defaulting to sadness or anxiety.

#13: Elevated Thinking

#1: Adrian!, #3: Every Tennis Racket Is Unique, #4: Nunc Est Bibendum, #6: How Many?, #7: Day Day?, #9: I Hear That, #10: Perfect Percentages, #12: Train Yourself to Be Happy, #13: Elevated Thinking, #15: A Frisbee Funeral, #16: The Most State, #18: All Tired Out, #19: Life Is Weird, #21: Age of Aquarius, #22: What a Square, #24: A Groundbreaking Speech, #25: The Old Man and the Sea

Can you imagine believing in a future invention so much that you build it into your building before it even exists? That’s what happened in 1853. Passenger elevators hadn’t really become a thing yet, but Elisha Otis had just demonstrated his new system for keeping such an elevator safe.
Peter Cooper believed in the concept so much that he had an elevator installed in the Cooper Union Foundation building in New York City. However, there was a wrinkle in his plan: he made the shaft cylindrical because he was confident that elevators would be cylindrical. Otis ended up having to design a special elevator for the building.

#15: A Frisbee Funeral

#1: Adrian!, #3: Every Tennis Racket Is Unique, #4: Nunc Est Bibendum, #6: How Many?, #7: Day Day?, #9: I Hear That, #10: Perfect Percentages, #12: Train Yourself to Be Happy, #13: Elevated Thinking, #15: A Frisbee Funeral, #16: The Most State, #18: All Tired Out, #19: Life Is Weird, #21: Age of Aquarius, #22: What a Square, #24: A Groundbreaking Speech, #25: The Old Man and the Sea

It’s pretty morbid, but do you ever think about what you’re going to do with your remains once you’ve passed away? Of course, you can just be buried, but that’s so cliche. Why not do something exciting? Personally, I want to be cremated, have my remains condensed into a jewel and set in a ring, and force my descendants to wear it if they want to inherit any of my money.
But if that’s not for you, why not have something else fun done with your remains? You don’t even have to be the inventor of Frisbee to do this; you could just be a Frisbee enthusiast. And then you could force your descendants to play with your Frisbee if they want to inherit any of your money.

#16: The Most State

#1: Adrian!, #3: Every Tennis Racket Is Unique, #4: Nunc Est Bibendum, #6: How Many?, #7: Day Day?, #9: I Hear That, #10: Perfect Percentages, #12: Train Yourself to Be Happy, #13: Elevated Thinking, #15: A Frisbee Funeral, #16: The Most State, #18: All Tired Out, #19: Life Is Weird, #21: Age of Aquarius, #22: What a Square, #24: A Groundbreaking Speech, #25: The Old Man and the Sea

Say what you will about it, but there are a lot of superlatives attached to Alaska. It is the largest state in the United States, has the highest mountain in North America, has more coastline than the rest of the United States combined, and is the state I’m least interested in living in because I am such a wuss about being cold.
But here’s a crazy one that you might not be aware of! You probably already knew that it’s the farthest north state; you might be surprised to hear that it extends farther west than Hawaii. But I bet you’ve never considered that because the Aleutian Islands extend into the eastern hemisphere, it can be argued that it’s also the easternmost state.

#18: All Tired Out

#1: Adrian!, #3: Every Tennis Racket Is Unique, #4: Nunc Est Bibendum, #6: How Many?, #7: Day Day?, #9: I Hear That, #10: Perfect Percentages, #12: Train Yourself to Be Happy, #13: Elevated Thinking, #15: A Frisbee Funeral, #16: The Most State, #18: All Tired Out, #19: Life Is Weird, #21: Age of Aquarius, #22: What a Square, #24: A Groundbreaking Speech, #25: The Old Man and the Sea

We talked about Michelin earlier in this article; you might be familiar with other tire manufacturers as well. Which one do you think makes the most tires? Maybe it’s the one with the brand name that you most often see on the cars around you?
Well, I don’t even need to hear your answer to know that you’re wrong. It is, in fact, LEGO, which I am certain none of you guessed. But it makes sense if you think about it; they make billions of little LEGO cars, I imagine, and those all need tiny little toy tires.

#19: Life Is Weird

#1: Adrian!, #3: Every Tennis Racket Is Unique, #4: Nunc Est Bibendum, #6: How Many?, #7: Day Day?, #9: I Hear That, #10: Perfect Percentages, #12: Train Yourself to Be Happy, #13: Elevated Thinking, #15: A Frisbee Funeral, #16: The Most State, #18: All Tired Out, #19: Life Is Weird, #21: Age of Aquarius, #22: What a Square, #24: A Groundbreaking Speech, #25: The Old Man and the Sea

Have you ever had a family member do something that you’re ashamed of? Isn’t it difficult to be associated with something you disapprove of because of a decision that a relative made? Well, imagine how much harder it would be if your younger brother assassinated the president of the United States.
That’s what happened to Edwin Booth, a famous Shakespearean actor who is now better known for his younger brother’s actions. But in an interesting twist, he once saved Lincoln’s son from falling onto a train platform. I hope that knowing the heroic act he performed to help the president’s family made him feel a little better about the shame of what his brother had done.

#21: Age of Aquarius

#1: Adrian!, #3: Every Tennis Racket Is Unique, #4: Nunc Est Bibendum, #6: How Many?, #7: Day Day?, #9: I Hear That, #10: Perfect Percentages, #12: Train Yourself to Be Happy, #13: Elevated Thinking, #15: A Frisbee Funeral, #16: The Most State, #18: All Tired Out, #19: Life Is Weird, #21: Age of Aquarius, #22: What a Square, #24: A Groundbreaking Speech, #25: The Old Man and the Sea

Do you believe in zodiac signs? Do you read your horoscope every day to see what you can expect? Have you ever explained away your behavior by shrugging and saying, “Well, I’m a Taurus, and that’s just what we’re like”?
If so, and if you’re an Aquarius, here’s something you should worry about. If you don’t believe in all of that, then you can rest easy in knowing that something had to be the most common sign in mental hospitals, and it just happened to be Aquarius, and that has absolutely no meaning in your life.

#22: What a Square

#1: Adrian!, #3: Every Tennis Racket Is Unique, #4: Nunc Est Bibendum, #6: How Many?, #7: Day Day?, #9: I Hear That, #10: Perfect Percentages, #12: Train Yourself to Be Happy, #13: Elevated Thinking, #15: A Frisbee Funeral, #16: The Most State, #18: All Tired Out, #19: Life Is Weird, #21: Age of Aquarius, #22: What a Square, #24: A Groundbreaking Speech, #25: The Old Man and the Sea

If you’ve looked at a map of the United States closely, you’ll have noticed that the eastern United States is full of tiny, oddly shaped states, and the West is full of big rectangles. I’m proud to live in Utah, one of three states that is basically just a big old rectangle (or, in our case, a rectangle with the corner taken out of it).
Only it’s not quite as straightforward as that. These borders were drawn by surveyors doing the best they could with the tools available to them in the 1800s, and there were loads of little errors, leading to shapes that were actually pretty complex. But it’s close enough that I’m still comfortable claiming we are all big rectangles.

#24: A Groundbreaking Speech

#1: Adrian!, #3: Every Tennis Racket Is Unique, #4: Nunc Est Bibendum, #6: How Many?, #7: Day Day?, #9: I Hear That, #10: Perfect Percentages, #12: Train Yourself to Be Happy, #13: Elevated Thinking, #15: A Frisbee Funeral, #16: The Most State, #18: All Tired Out, #19: Life Is Weird, #21: Age of Aquarius, #22: What a Square, #24: A Groundbreaking Speech, #25: The Old Man and the Sea

If your child won a big award, like an Oscar, I bet you would be incredibly proud, and I bet you would be glued to your TV, ready to watch her give her big acceptance speech. But what if you were deaf and therefore unable to hear that speech?
That’s what happened with the parents of Louise Fletcher, who won the Academy Award in 1975 for her portrayal of Nurse Ratched in One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest. What an amazing moment that must have been for her parents to have a message just for them, thanking them for all they did to support their daughter.

#25: The Old Man and the Sea

#1: Adrian!, #3: Every Tennis Racket Is Unique, #4: Nunc Est Bibendum, #6: How Many?, #7: Day Day?, #9: I Hear That, #10: Perfect Percentages, #12: Train Yourself to Be Happy, #13: Elevated Thinking, #15: A Frisbee Funeral, #16: The Most State, #18: All Tired Out, #19: Life Is Weird, #21: Age of Aquarius, #22: What a Square, #24: A Groundbreaking Speech, #25: The Old Man and the Sea

This next trivia fact brings up a lot of questions. For one thing, what in the world possessed Ernest Hemingway to get on the second plane? If I had been in a plane crash, even if I had walked away unscathed, I would need a couple of years before I felt comfortable getting back on a plane.
Second, how did he survive, and where did he find all that gin? Third, is there anything more Ernest Hemingway than stumbling up when you were supposed to be dead with a bottle of gin in your hand?
