Grading each of the 20 Premier League managers' 2024/25 season

Wrapped up

20: Russell Martin/Ivan Juric (Southampton) F, 18: Ruben Amorim (Manchester United) D-, 17: Ange Postecoglou (Tottenham Hotspur) D-, 16: Kieran McKenna (Ipswich Town) D, 15: Graham Potter (West Ham United) D+, 14: Enzo Maresca (Chelsea) C-, 13: Pep Guardiola (Manchester City) C, 11: Oliver Glasner (Crystal Palace) C, 10: Andoni Iraola (AFC Bournemouth) C+, 9: Marco Silva (Fulham) B-, 8: Thomas Frank (Brentford) B, 7: Fabian Hürzeler (Brighton) B, 5: Mikel Arteta (Arsenal) B+, 3: Unai Emery (Aston Villa) A, 4: Eddie Howe (Newcastle United) A, 2: Nuno Espirito Santo (Nottingham Forest) A+

The 2024/25 Premier League season has drawn to a close, so let's grade each current Premier League manager based on their performance in the season.

20: Russell Martin/Ivan Juric (Southampton) F

20: Russell Martin/Ivan Juric (Southampton) F, 18: Ruben Amorim (Manchester United) D-, 17: Ange Postecoglou (Tottenham Hotspur) D-, 16: Kieran McKenna (Ipswich Town) D, 15: Graham Potter (West Ham United) D+, 14: Enzo Maresca (Chelsea) C-, 13: Pep Guardiola (Manchester City) C, 11: Oliver Glasner (Crystal Palace) C, 10: Andoni Iraola (AFC Bournemouth) C+, 9: Marco Silva (Fulham) B-, 8: Thomas Frank (Brentford) B, 7: Fabian Hürzeler (Brighton) B, 5: Mikel Arteta (Arsenal) B+, 3: Unai Emery (Aston Villa) A, 4: Eddie Howe (Newcastle United) A, 2: Nuno Espirito Santo (Nottingham Forest) A+

Simon Rusk took over once the club had been relegated, so we will focus on Russell Martin and Ivan Juric, who oversaw the second-worst Premier League points total in history. Juric won one game in 108 days, and Martin won one in 16 Premier League games. Abysmal.

18: Ruben Amorim (Manchester United) D-

20: Russell Martin/Ivan Juric (Southampton) F, 18: Ruben Amorim (Manchester United) D-, 17: Ange Postecoglou (Tottenham Hotspur) D-, 16: Kieran McKenna (Ipswich Town) D, 15: Graham Potter (West Ham United) D+, 14: Enzo Maresca (Chelsea) C-, 13: Pep Guardiola (Manchester City) C, 11: Oliver Glasner (Crystal Palace) C, 10: Andoni Iraola (AFC Bournemouth) C+, 9: Marco Silva (Fulham) B-, 8: Thomas Frank (Brentford) B, 7: Fabian Hürzeler (Brighton) B, 5: Mikel Arteta (Arsenal) B+, 3: Unai Emery (Aston Villa) A, 4: Eddie Howe (Newcastle United) A, 2: Nuno Espirito Santo (Nottingham Forest) A+

Despite reaching the Europa League final, Ruben Amorim's 5-2-3 formation has cost them dearly in the Premier League. The lack of midfielders has proved pivotal in United's terrible run of form. In 27 matches with United, which boasts the likes of Bruno Fernandes, Amorim has won only seven games and lost 14.

17: Ange Postecoglou (Tottenham Hotspur) D-

20: Russell Martin/Ivan Juric (Southampton) F, 18: Ruben Amorim (Manchester United) D-, 17: Ange Postecoglou (Tottenham Hotspur) D-, 16: Kieran McKenna (Ipswich Town) D, 15: Graham Potter (West Ham United) D+, 14: Enzo Maresca (Chelsea) C-, 13: Pep Guardiola (Manchester City) C, 11: Oliver Glasner (Crystal Palace) C, 10: Andoni Iraola (AFC Bournemouth) C+, 9: Marco Silva (Fulham) B-, 8: Thomas Frank (Brentford) B, 7: Fabian Hürzeler (Brighton) B, 5: Mikel Arteta (Arsenal) B+, 3: Unai Emery (Aston Villa) A, 4: Eddie Howe (Newcastle United) A, 2: Nuno Espirito Santo (Nottingham Forest) A+

Ange Postecoglou's free-flowing attacking football has backfired tremendously this season, with Tottenham losing 22 games this campaign. Postecoglou has had to deal with a catalogue of injuries to some of his most important players, putting him higher than Amorim.

16: Kieran McKenna (Ipswich Town) D

20: Russell Martin/Ivan Juric (Southampton) F, 18: Ruben Amorim (Manchester United) D-, 17: Ange Postecoglou (Tottenham Hotspur) D-, 16: Kieran McKenna (Ipswich Town) D, 15: Graham Potter (West Ham United) D+, 14: Enzo Maresca (Chelsea) C-, 13: Pep Guardiola (Manchester City) C, 11: Oliver Glasner (Crystal Palace) C, 10: Andoni Iraola (AFC Bournemouth) C+, 9: Marco Silva (Fulham) B-, 8: Thomas Frank (Brentford) B, 7: Fabian Hürzeler (Brighton) B, 5: Mikel Arteta (Arsenal) B+, 3: Unai Emery (Aston Villa) A, 4: Eddie Howe (Newcastle United) A, 2: Nuno Espirito Santo (Nottingham Forest) A+

With Kieran McKenna's squad mostly consisting of Championship players, he and his team have had a fair crack against players and managers far superior to those at Ipswich Town. Despite being massive underdogs each week, winning less than five games is still not good enough.

15: Graham Potter (West Ham United) D+

20: Russell Martin/Ivan Juric (Southampton) F, 18: Ruben Amorim (Manchester United) D-, 17: Ange Postecoglou (Tottenham Hotspur) D-, 16: Kieran McKenna (Ipswich Town) D, 15: Graham Potter (West Ham United) D+, 14: Enzo Maresca (Chelsea) C-, 13: Pep Guardiola (Manchester City) C, 11: Oliver Glasner (Crystal Palace) C, 10: Andoni Iraola (AFC Bournemouth) C+, 9: Marco Silva (Fulham) B-, 8: Thomas Frank (Brentford) B, 7: Fabian Hürzeler (Brighton) B, 5: Mikel Arteta (Arsenal) B+, 3: Unai Emery (Aston Villa) A, 4: Eddie Howe (Newcastle United) A, 2: Nuno Espirito Santo (Nottingham Forest) A+

Graham Potter needs more time to implement his ideas at West Ham, with the Englishman winning five of his 18 Premier League matches since his arrival. He replaced Julen Lopetegui midway through the season, who recorded six wins in 16 league matches. They have gone from European football chasing to the bottom half of the table.

14: Enzo Maresca (Chelsea) C-

20: Russell Martin/Ivan Juric (Southampton) F, 18: Ruben Amorim (Manchester United) D-, 17: Ange Postecoglou (Tottenham Hotspur) D-, 16: Kieran McKenna (Ipswich Town) D, 15: Graham Potter (West Ham United) D+, 14: Enzo Maresca (Chelsea) C-, 13: Pep Guardiola (Manchester City) C, 11: Oliver Glasner (Crystal Palace) C, 10: Andoni Iraola (AFC Bournemouth) C+, 9: Marco Silva (Fulham) B-, 8: Thomas Frank (Brentford) B, 7: Fabian Hürzeler (Brighton) B, 5: Mikel Arteta (Arsenal) B+, 3: Unai Emery (Aston Villa) A, 4: Eddie Howe (Newcastle United) A, 2: Nuno Espirito Santo (Nottingham Forest) A+

After bringing over ten new players and spending more than £200 million, Enzo Maresca was expected to compete for the title in his first season as Chelsea boss, so it's fair to say that finishing fourth has been a failure in many people's eyes.

13: Pep Guardiola (Manchester City) C

20: Russell Martin/Ivan Juric (Southampton) F, 18: Ruben Amorim (Manchester United) D-, 17: Ange Postecoglou (Tottenham Hotspur) D-, 16: Kieran McKenna (Ipswich Town) D, 15: Graham Potter (West Ham United) D+, 14: Enzo Maresca (Chelsea) C-, 13: Pep Guardiola (Manchester City) C, 11: Oliver Glasner (Crystal Palace) C, 10: Andoni Iraola (AFC Bournemouth) C+, 9: Marco Silva (Fulham) B-, 8: Thomas Frank (Brentford) B, 7: Fabian Hürzeler (Brighton) B, 5: Mikel Arteta (Arsenal) B+, 3: Unai Emery (Aston Villa) A, 4: Eddie Howe (Newcastle United) A, 2: Nuno Espirito Santo (Nottingham Forest) A+

Given the expectations that Pep Guardiola and Manchester City have set for themselves, the season hasn't been great for the 2024 champions. Rodri has been an exceptional miss for how Guardiola likes to play, but the challenge for the European spots is way below City's expectations.

11: Oliver Glasner (Crystal Palace) C

20: Russell Martin/Ivan Juric (Southampton) F, 18: Ruben Amorim (Manchester United) D-, 17: Ange Postecoglou (Tottenham Hotspur) D-, 16: Kieran McKenna (Ipswich Town) D, 15: Graham Potter (West Ham United) D+, 14: Enzo Maresca (Chelsea) C-, 13: Pep Guardiola (Manchester City) C, 11: Oliver Glasner (Crystal Palace) C, 10: Andoni Iraola (AFC Bournemouth) C+, 9: Marco Silva (Fulham) B-, 8: Thomas Frank (Brentford) B, 7: Fabian Hürzeler (Brighton) B, 5: Mikel Arteta (Arsenal) B+, 3: Unai Emery (Aston Villa) A, 4: Eddie Howe (Newcastle United) A, 2: Nuno Espirito Santo (Nottingham Forest) A+

Despite winning the FA Cup and securing European football, Oliver Glasner's Palace are four points better off than they finished last season, winning 13 of their 38 games and losing 11. Glasner has put Eberechi Eze in a position to flourish, scoring eight goals and providing eight assists in the league this season.

10: Andoni Iraola (AFC Bournemouth) C+

20: Russell Martin/Ivan Juric (Southampton) F, 18: Ruben Amorim (Manchester United) D-, 17: Ange Postecoglou (Tottenham Hotspur) D-, 16: Kieran McKenna (Ipswich Town) D, 15: Graham Potter (West Ham United) D+, 14: Enzo Maresca (Chelsea) C-, 13: Pep Guardiola (Manchester City) C, 11: Oliver Glasner (Crystal Palace) C, 10: Andoni Iraola (AFC Bournemouth) C+, 9: Marco Silva (Fulham) B-, 8: Thomas Frank (Brentford) B, 7: Fabian Hürzeler (Brighton) B, 5: Mikel Arteta (Arsenal) B+, 3: Unai Emery (Aston Villa) A, 4: Eddie Howe (Newcastle United) A, 2: Nuno Espirito Santo (Nottingham Forest) A+

Andoni Iraola has been a breath of fresh air on the South Coast at Bournemouth, with his fast brand of chaotic football causing problems for every team in the league. Iraola has done an excellent job consolidating their place in the league, but can they start challenging for Europe?

9: Marco Silva (Fulham) B-

20: Russell Martin/Ivan Juric (Southampton) F, 18: Ruben Amorim (Manchester United) D-, 17: Ange Postecoglou (Tottenham Hotspur) D-, 16: Kieran McKenna (Ipswich Town) D, 15: Graham Potter (West Ham United) D+, 14: Enzo Maresca (Chelsea) C-, 13: Pep Guardiola (Manchester City) C, 11: Oliver Glasner (Crystal Palace) C, 10: Andoni Iraola (AFC Bournemouth) C+, 9: Marco Silva (Fulham) B-, 8: Thomas Frank (Brentford) B, 7: Fabian Hürzeler (Brighton) B, 5: Mikel Arteta (Arsenal) B+, 3: Unai Emery (Aston Villa) A, 4: Eddie Howe (Newcastle United) A, 2: Nuno Espirito Santo (Nottingham Forest) A+

Marco Silva has made slight improvements to Fulham's team this season. They have lost three fewer games, conceded nearly ten fewer goals, and have seven more points than they finished last season. Silva has got his team playing better as a unit, and the results have followed.

8: Thomas Frank (Brentford) B

20: Russell Martin/Ivan Juric (Southampton) F, 18: Ruben Amorim (Manchester United) D-, 17: Ange Postecoglou (Tottenham Hotspur) D-, 16: Kieran McKenna (Ipswich Town) D, 15: Graham Potter (West Ham United) D+, 14: Enzo Maresca (Chelsea) C-, 13: Pep Guardiola (Manchester City) C, 11: Oliver Glasner (Crystal Palace) C, 10: Andoni Iraola (AFC Bournemouth) C+, 9: Marco Silva (Fulham) B-, 8: Thomas Frank (Brentford) B, 7: Fabian Hürzeler (Brighton) B, 5: Mikel Arteta (Arsenal) B+, 3: Unai Emery (Aston Villa) A, 4: Eddie Howe (Newcastle United) A, 2: Nuno Espirito Santo (Nottingham Forest) A+

Thomas Frank continues to get the best out of his Brentford team, despite losing their top goalscorer Ivan Toney in the summer of 2024. Frank shifted his tactics from one up top to two, accommodating Bryan Mbeumo and Yoane Wissa, who contributed 39 goals this season.

7: Fabian Hürzeler (Brighton) B

20: Russell Martin/Ivan Juric (Southampton) F, 18: Ruben Amorim (Manchester United) D-, 17: Ange Postecoglou (Tottenham Hotspur) D-, 16: Kieran McKenna (Ipswich Town) D, 15: Graham Potter (West Ham United) D+, 14: Enzo Maresca (Chelsea) C-, 13: Pep Guardiola (Manchester City) C, 11: Oliver Glasner (Crystal Palace) C, 10: Andoni Iraola (AFC Bournemouth) C+, 9: Marco Silva (Fulham) B-, 8: Thomas Frank (Brentford) B, 7: Fabian Hürzeler (Brighton) B, 5: Mikel Arteta (Arsenal) B+, 3: Unai Emery (Aston Villa) A, 4: Eddie Howe (Newcastle United) A, 2: Nuno Espirito Santo (Nottingham Forest) A+

At 32, Fabian Hürzeler is the youngest manager in the league by some distance, but his analytical style has fit Brighton like a hand in a glove, giving them a chance of pushing for European football again. His mix of youth and experience has balanced out perfectly, and the results have shown on the pitch, winning 16 and losing nine.

5: Mikel Arteta (Arsenal) B+

20: Russell Martin/Ivan Juric (Southampton) F, 18: Ruben Amorim (Manchester United) D-, 17: Ange Postecoglou (Tottenham Hotspur) D-, 16: Kieran McKenna (Ipswich Town) D, 15: Graham Potter (West Ham United) D+, 14: Enzo Maresca (Chelsea) C-, 13: Pep Guardiola (Manchester City) C, 11: Oliver Glasner (Crystal Palace) C, 10: Andoni Iraola (AFC Bournemouth) C+, 9: Marco Silva (Fulham) B-, 8: Thomas Frank (Brentford) B, 7: Fabian Hürzeler (Brighton) B, 5: Mikel Arteta (Arsenal) B+, 3: Unai Emery (Aston Villa) A, 4: Eddie Howe (Newcastle United) A, 2: Nuno Espirito Santo (Nottingham Forest) A+

Arsenal has consolidated second place again in the Premier League, keeping Mikel Arteta on a flat line of progression. Injuries have played their part throughout the season, and there is no recognised striker, but 14 draws aren't good enough, and they would have hoped to challenge for the title more seriously.

3: Unai Emery (Aston Villa) A

20: Russell Martin/Ivan Juric (Southampton) F, 18: Ruben Amorim (Manchester United) D-, 17: Ange Postecoglou (Tottenham Hotspur) D-, 16: Kieran McKenna (Ipswich Town) D, 15: Graham Potter (West Ham United) D+, 14: Enzo Maresca (Chelsea) C-, 13: Pep Guardiola (Manchester City) C, 11: Oliver Glasner (Crystal Palace) C, 10: Andoni Iraola (AFC Bournemouth) C+, 9: Marco Silva (Fulham) B-, 8: Thomas Frank (Brentford) B, 7: Fabian Hürzeler (Brighton) B, 5: Mikel Arteta (Arsenal) B+, 3: Unai Emery (Aston Villa) A, 4: Eddie Howe (Newcastle United) A, 2: Nuno Espirito Santo (Nottingham Forest) A+

Unai Emery has turned Aston Villa into one of the best teams in the league, missing out on Champions League football after a terrible refereeing mistake in their final match against Manchester United. Emery has made acquisitions like Marcus Rashford and Marco Asensio to keep the squad competitive and firing on all cylinders.

4: Eddie Howe (Newcastle United) A

20: Russell Martin/Ivan Juric (Southampton) F, 18: Ruben Amorim (Manchester United) D-, 17: Ange Postecoglou (Tottenham Hotspur) D-, 16: Kieran McKenna (Ipswich Town) D, 15: Graham Potter (West Ham United) D+, 14: Enzo Maresca (Chelsea) C-, 13: Pep Guardiola (Manchester City) C, 11: Oliver Glasner (Crystal Palace) C, 10: Andoni Iraola (AFC Bournemouth) C+, 9: Marco Silva (Fulham) B-, 8: Thomas Frank (Brentford) B, 7: Fabian Hürzeler (Brighton) B, 5: Mikel Arteta (Arsenal) B+, 3: Unai Emery (Aston Villa) A, 4: Eddie Howe (Newcastle United) A, 2: Nuno Espirito Santo (Nottingham Forest) A+

The start of the season looked like misery for Eddie Howe's Newcastle, but their League Cup success has spurred them on a great run of form, consolidating Champions League football. Aleksander Isak has scored 23 goals in the league this season, while their trusted midfield of Bruno Guimaraes, Sandro Tonali, and Joelinton has been incredible.

2: Nuno Espirito Santo (Nottingham Forest) A+

20: Russell Martin/Ivan Juric (Southampton) F, 18: Ruben Amorim (Manchester United) D-, 17: Ange Postecoglou (Tottenham Hotspur) D-, 16: Kieran McKenna (Ipswich Town) D, 15: Graham Potter (West Ham United) D+, 14: Enzo Maresca (Chelsea) C-, 13: Pep Guardiola (Manchester City) C, 11: Oliver Glasner (Crystal Palace) C, 10: Andoni Iraola (AFC Bournemouth) C+, 9: Marco Silva (Fulham) B-, 8: Thomas Frank (Brentford) B, 7: Fabian Hürzeler (Brighton) B, 5: Mikel Arteta (Arsenal) B+, 3: Unai Emery (Aston Villa) A, 4: Eddie Howe (Newcastle United) A, 2: Nuno Espirito Santo (Nottingham Forest) A+

From fighting relegation to securing European football, Nuno Espirito Santo has worked miracles to get Forest to where they are this season. Forest challenged for the top four spots before letting their foot off the gas in the last month. Nuno has created a lightning-fast attack and a defensively resolute back four. Forest has only lost 11 of its 38 games.
