The Milwaukee Brewers, after months of instability, finally have a reliable five-man starting rotation. Their ace, Freddy Peralta, is the only established MLB starter who has remained healthy all year. Now, after weathering the injury storm, the Brewers have Jose Quintana, Quinn Priester, Chad Patrick, and Jacob Misiorowski following him.
This means, of course, that Milwaukee has two veterans and two rookies in their rotation. Priester has only made 33 career appearances, but exceeded his rookie limits in 2024.
But as every Brewers fan will say, the team cannot rely on all of their starters staying healthy. Fortunately, they have a couple veterans who are drawing closer to a return from the injured list, one of them being two-time All-Star Brandon Woodruff.

As the Milwaukee faithful are well-aware, Woodruff has not appeared in the Major League game since late in the 2023 season, a year that saw him make just five starts. It became apparent, after numerous injuries that year, that the two-time All-Star would need surgery. What is more, that surgery would keep him out for the entirety of the 2024 season.
After sitting out all of last season due to his injury, Woodruff planned to make his return to the Majors at some point during this season. As he progressed in his rehab, many became optimistic that he could even make it back in May, but obviously that has not happened.
At one point, Woodruff was in Triple-A and on the verge of making his season debut with the Brewers, but ankle tendonitis set him back. After letting his ankle heal, he returned to the minors for more rehab work.
Once again, he appeared to be on the verge of his season debut, but then took a line drive off of his elbow in what was supposed to be his final rehab start.

Fortunately, multiple imaging tests revealed that Woodruff did not suffer any bone breaks or other structural damage after being hit by the line drive. However, his elbow was (is) pretty swollen, and the team needed to wait for the swelling to go down before he could, once again, resume his rehab starts.
On Sunday, Brewers reporter Curt Hogg posted on X (formerly Twitter) that Woodruff has begun throwing again, and all signs are pointing to a return soon.
As one can see, the two-time All-Star pitched a bullpen session and has another one scheduled for next week. If that goes well, he will return to the minors for more rehab starts. Once he is able to throw 80+ pitches in a game, he will return to Milwaukee.
It is not yet clear which of the Brewers’ five current starters would lose their spot in the event Woodruff comes back.
