New UK Entry Rule for Americans

As of January 8, 2025, U.S. citizens traveling to the United Kingdom for short visits—such as tourism, business, or short-term study—must obtain an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) prior to departure.

This requirement applies even to those transiting through UK airports without entering the country. The ETA serves as a digital pre-clearance, similar to the U.S.

Cruise Passengers Also Affected

Cruise passengers are not exempt from this new rule. Starting January 8, 2025, travelers disembarking at UK ports as part of their cruise itinerary must have an approved ETA, even if they do not plan to leave the ship.

Transit Passengers: A Temporary Exemption

Initially, the ETA requirement extended to all transit passengers. However, as of January 17, 2025, the UK government introduced a temporary exemption for airside transit passengers—those who remain in the airport's international transit area and do not pass through UK border control.

This exemption currently applies to Heathrow and Manchester airports.

Application Process and Cost

Applying for an ETA is a straightforward process that can be completed online or via the official UK ETA app. Applicants need a valid passport, a recent photograph, and a debit or credit card for payment.

The application fee is £16, and decisions are typically made within three working days.

Validity and Requirements

Once approved, the ETA is valid for two years or until the traveler's passport expires, whichever comes first. It allows multiple entries into the UK for stays of up to six months per visit.

Failure to obtain an ETA can result in denied boarding or entry into the UK. Travelers are advised to apply well in advance of their trip to avoid any disruptions.
