Google Search AI Mode now rolling out in Malaysia, powered by Gemini 2.5

Google Malaysia has announced that it has started the roll out of AI Mode in Malaysia. This is their most advanced AI-powered search experience yet powered by Gemini 2.5.

The feature was announced during Google I/O 2025, and it was initially rolled out in the US as an experiment. Now, the search giant is pushing AI Mode to more users globally including users in Malaysia.

AI Mode designed to provide answers to most complex questions

AI Mode is powered by a custom version of Gemini 2.5 and is intended for queries that would normally require multiple searches.

According to Google, early testers have asked questions 2-3 times longer than traditional searches, making it especially useful for exploratory tasks such as comparing products, planning trips, or tackling complex how-to questions.

For example, AI Mode can handle queries such as “I am hosting an open house for about 30 guests from diverse cultural and religious backgrounds. Help me design a halal-friendly menu that caters to different dietary needs while celebrating the rich flavours of Malaysian cuisine.

And then, you can follow up with a prompt “In addition, suggest simple décor ideas and classic Malaysian games that create a warm, welcoming atmosphere and encourage everyone to join in the spirit of togetherness.

Behind the scenes, Google Search’s AI Mode uses a query fan-out technique, breaking down a user’s question into subtopics and issuing multiple queries to dive deeper into the web to find highly relevant content. If you want to expand further, you can follow up with “Can you suggest some kuih-muih that can be prepared in advance”, to dig deeper.

So essentially, Google is bringing the Gemini experience right into Search. Besides providing answers with access to high-quality web content, it will also tap into fresh and real-time sources which include Knowledge Graph and shopping data for billions of products.

AI Mode works with voice and images

Besides normal text queries, Google Search AI mode is designed to be multimodal, allowing you to ask questions by voice or simply taking a picture or uploading an image. To ask by voice, just tap on the mic button and ask your query in AI mode.

Utilising the capabilities of Lens, you can also ask questions based on what you’re seeing at the moment. For example, if you’ve received a plant as a gift, you can snap a picture and ask “What is this plant and give me instructions on how to re-pot and take care of it“.

After Gemini identifies the object, it will provide a detailed step-by-step response along with links to articles. If you have further questions, you can follow up with more questions such as “Where should I palce it in my home for best growth?

According to Google, helping people discover content from across the web remains central to their mission. With AI Mode, they are enabling users to express exactly what they are looking for with all its nuances and get to the right web content in a range of formats. This helps to expand the types of questions people can ask and creating new opportunities for content discovery.

To get started, you can visit Google Search’s AI Mode. However, at the time of writing, we still couldn’t get it to work. We tried in different devices and Google accounts, and we got “AI Mode is not currently available on your device or account”.
