Newell competed collegiately for Texas State University, winning the Sun Belt Conference pole vault title for a second straight year as a senior and setting the conference record at 4.28m, per the university's website.

In July 2016, she was named to the Canadian Olympic team despite living in the United States. She qualified for the team because her mum was born in the country.

At the 2016 Olympics, she placed 29th, clearing 4.15m. At the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo, she tied for first in the qualification round, clearing 4.55m. However, she received no mark in the final, per the Olympic website.

Newell placed 12th in the women's pole vault at the 2017 World Championships, clearing 4.45m and 4.65m at Texas State University San Marcos in June 2017. This is the second-best all-time performance in Athletics Canada history, behind Alysha Newman.

At the 2018 Canadian Athletics Championship in Ottawa, Newell came first, clearing 4.45m and qualifying for the NACAC Championships in Toronto. She also came seventh in the Commonwealth Games that year.

At the most recent Olympics in Paris, Newell competed in her third straight Games and missed out on qualifying for the finals again, clearing 4.40m in the qualification round.
