This Princess Wears a Kate Middleton-Inspired Dress for Her Baby’s Royal Christening

Who can resist a pop of this bright color for a happy occasion?

The Gist

  • Princess Sofia of Sweden wore bright yellow for the christening of her fourth child and only daughter Princess Ines on June 13—which also happened to be Sofia’s 10th wedding anniversary with her husband, Prince Carl Philip.
  • Sofia’s baptismal look mirrored Kate Middleton’s 2013 ensemble to christen eldest child Prince George that October.
  • Kate’s yellow look was from Alexander McQueen, a brand she’s continued to wear throughout her royal life since.

In addition to being glamorous princesses who married into the royal family, Kate Middleton and Princess Sofia of Sweden have something else in common—their christening style!

On June 13—which doubled as Sofia’s milestone 10th wedding anniversary to husband Prince Carl Philip—Sofia wore vibrant yellow to the baptism of her fourth child and only daughter, Princess Ines. It mirrored a look Kate had worn to her eldest child Prince George’s christening, which took place in October 2013, three months after his birth that July 22. Kate’s dress for the occasion was by Alexander McQueen—long a royal favorite of the Princess of Wales, who wore the designer for her 2011 wedding to Prince William and has worn the brand countless times since.

Both women completed their respective christening ensembles with very royal headpieces.

Sofia’s fourth child was born on February 7 of this year, and the Duke and Duchess of Värmland are also parents to three boys—Prince Alexander, Prince Gabriel, and Prince Julian.

This isn’t the first time a Swedish royal has channeled Kate in fashion: Carl Philip’s younger sister Princess Madeleine wore a red tartan skirt to a 2021 Christmas tree unveiling at the Royal Palace in Stockholm that mirrored a 2018 look Kate wore alongside William to a Christmas party celebrating military families. Kate’s red and green tartan skirt was by Emilia Wickstead, another favorite of the Princess of Wales. Per People, both women styled the pieces similarly, complete with black sweaters and heeled black boots.

Five days after Ines was born, her parents shared a photo of her with her three older brothers to their Instagram, with another photo showing Julian giving his little sister a kiss on the forehead. “It turned out to be a perfect little quartet,” Carl Philip and Sofia captioned the photos. “Big and warm thanks for all the nice congratulations to our little Ines.”

The birth of Ines came two months after Sofia’s 40th birthday in December 2024, and that same month Sofia told Vogue Scandinavia that she “always, always dreamt of a family”: “It’s one of my biggest goals in life,” she said. “Not everyone has that—I had that.”

“Both me and my husband come from a family of five, with three kids, so we thought that that would be a good number, and we felt quite satisfied with that,” she said. “But, gratefully, there’s a bonus on the way. We feel very humble and grateful. It was maybe not in the plan, but now we are very, very excited. Especially the kids.”

Of plans to ring in her 40th in a big way, Sofia said, “I’m going to be quite highly pregnant. So I think a bigger birthday party will wait a little bit. So probably just with my closest friends and family.” That said, she continued, “I would not change where I am at all. I’m in a very happy place in life.”

Though it’s not known how much time Sofia and Kate have spent together, Sofia’s sister-in-law Crown Princess Victoria (who is the older sister of Carl Philip) and her husband Prince Daniel joined the Prince and Princess of Wales in the U.K. in late 2023, telling Aftonbladet that they enjoyed the time spent with their fellow heirs to the throne.

“It’s always fun,” she said, per Hello!. “We share a lot and it feels very natural and easy to meet.”

“They are nice people who do a lot for their country,” she added. “We exchange thoughts and ideas and share many interests.”
