The Gist
- After a busy weekend with Trooping the Colour and Father’s Day, Kate Middleton made another public appearance on June 16, attending the Garter Day Service at St. George’s Chapel.
- Trooping the Colour kicks off a very busy season for members of the royal family, including Royal Ascot and Prince William’s birthday later this week.
- Kate missed the Garter Day Service last year amid her cancer treatment, and made a return on Monday wearing a Self Portrait look she wore just last month.
We have officially entered busy season for the royal family—with Trooping the Colour on Saturday, the Order of the Garter service today, and other events—like Royal Ascot and Prince William’s 43rd birthday—to follow in short order this week.
The good news for us? We’ll get many Kate Middleton fashion moments, as we did at the June 16 Garter Day Service at St. George’s Chapel in Windsor, nearby the home William and Kate share with their kids on the Windsor estate. While the Princess of Wales attended Trooping the Colour last year amid her cancer treatment, she missed the Garter Day Service—but made a triumphant return on Monday.

For the occasion, Kate was a supportive wife as she watched William parade from Windsor Castle to St. George’s Chapel. The Order of the Garter is the “oldest and most senior order of chivalry in Britain,” People reported, and for the occasion Kate re-wore an outfit she’s worn numerous times before, including very recently: a Self Portrait dress that she wore for the VE Day concert just last month. She paired the outfit with a Sean Barrett hat.
While all eyes are always on the Princess of Wales and her fashion choices, it’s difficult to miss the regalia worn by the members of the Order of the Garter: a blue velvet cape with an ostrich-plumed hat. William donned the ensemble, as did King Charles and Queen Camilla.

According to People, Kate made her debut at the annual event as far back as 2008, when she was still William’s girlfriend. That year, William received his knighthood in the Order of the Garter, and the outlet wrote that “It was significant that Kate was there, as it showed that she was being welcomed into the royal family fold.”

The Order of the Garter is around 700 years old and has roots in the reign of King Edward III, who was reportedly so inspired by tales of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table that he created his own group of honorable knights, People reported. According to The Daily Express, there are strict rules as to who can be inducted into the Order, as membership is limited to the monarch, the Prince of Wales, and a maximum of only 24 living members.
