The Milwaukee Bucks need to find a point guard this offseason, whether in the draft, free agency or via trade, and Wizards free agent Malcolm Brogdon has surfaced here and there as a possible option. If they want him, though, they should know there will be competition from a Western Conference team, the Dallas Mavericks.

Former Milwaukee Bucks Rookie of the Year Could Be Headed South

Reports came out on Tuesday evening that Dallas had agreed to a three-year, $119 million extension with point guard Kyrie Irving, who declined a $43 million player option in order to sign the new deal. Recovering from a late-season ACL injury, though, he will miss a large chunk of the 2025-26 schedule. Like the Bucks with their Damian Lillard situation, Dallas needs someone to fill the void there in the meantime.

ESPN’s Shams Charania reports that Brogdon is among the guards the Mavericks are eying this summer.

Per NBA news aggregator Legion Hoops on twitter: “REPORT: The Mavericks are expected to use their $5.7 million MLE to target Chris Paul, Dennis Schroder, D’Angelo Russell, or Malcolm Brogdon, per @ShamsCharania.”

The $5.7 million midlevel exception would represent a massive paycut to Brogdon’s $22.5 million salary last season, but some kind of significant downgrade is in order. Brogdon signed his last contract coming off a Sixth Man of the Year campaign in Boston in 2023. His production in two seasons since with the Trail Blazers and Wizards does not merit similar money this time around.

Hampered by injury, his 2024-25 campaign in Washington featured career-lows in FG% and 3P% (43.3, 28.6). His 12.7 points per game were his lowest since Brogdon was a Bucks rookie. He also averaged 4.1 assists and 3.8 rebounds.

Based on his track record, though, the 32-year-old guard should enjoy some type of bounceback, given adequate health. Whether he is willing to sign for a number as low as the Mavs’ MLE remains to be seen.
