Las Vegas crews continue to battle Wetlands Park brush fire; 20% of 110 acres contained
LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — Fire crews from Clark County continued overnight to battle the Wetlands Park brush fire that broke out Tuesday afternoon. By Wednesday afternoon, only 20% of the fire was contained.
Just two weeks after a brush fire scorched parts of Wetlands Park, another fire burned around 110 acres on Tuesday, June 24, according to Clark County.
The fire broke out just after 3 p.m. in a desert area northeast of Old Silver Bowl Park off Weisner Way. The cause of the fire remains undetermined.
“This is a recurring problem that’s happened several times over the years. The dryness doesn’t help either because it just spreads across the whole area,” local, Marquis Mack said.
On Tuesday, LVMPD’s Air Unit assisted fire crews in checking for anyone still on or near the trails after the area was closed by park police. They also worked with fire personnel to provide estimates on the burn size, direction of travel, and the best access routes to reach the flames quickly, Metro police said.
As of 12:30 on Wednesday, June 25, the fire was 20 percent contained, with crews from the Clark County Fire Department and the BLM continuing to extinguish hot spots near the fire perimeter.
According to the county, the goal of the crews is to reach full containment on the fire by the end of the day.
Authorities have asked the public to avoid the area as crews work to contain the fire. This includes staying away from the W.B. Bennett RC Airfield.
In addition to the CCFD and BLM, other agencies including the U.S. Forest Service and National Park Service responded.
Clark County Wetlands Park is 2,900 acres. The County reminds the public that no open flames, off-roading, target shooting, or fireworks are allowed in any Clark County parks.
