Princess Beatrice Has a Princess Diana-Like Style Moment on Opening Day of Royal Ascot

Kate Middleton also channeled the late Princess of Wales at Trooping the Colour over the weekend.

The Gist

  • Princess Beatrice is known for her stylish looks at Royal Ascot, often preferring to lean into pink tones for her looks at the annual horseracing event.
  • Much like Kate Middleton at Trooping the Colour over the weekend, Beatrice channeled Princess Diana in her pink and white gingham look from Beulah London.
  • Diana wore a similar Catherine Walker coatdress on multiple occasions in 1989 and 1990.

Much like Kate Middleton channeled Princess Diana in aquamarine Catherine Walker at Trooping the Colour on June 14, Princess Beatrice mirrored her late aunt at day one of Royal Ascot on June 17.

Beatrice—along with a slew of other royals—attended the horseracing event’s annual kickoff wearing a pink gingham set reminiscent of the late Princess of Wales’s affinity for the pattern. Beatrice’s Beulah London ensemble had a belted jacket, puff sleeves, and large buttons, paired with a matching midi skirt with the same plaid pattern. Atop her head was a coordinating fascinator—customary for Ascot. She also added nude heels and a bag from Anya Hindmarch to complete the outfit.

Tatler broke down Beatrice’s look as the pink and white tweed “Gabriella” blouse and “Arabella” skirt, both from Beulah London, a favorite of the women in the royal family. This particular outfit is from Virginia Chadwyck Healey’s limited edition capsule collection for the brand—the same Virginia Chadwyk Healey who is a friend and former stylist of the Princess of Wales.

Diana—whose style is often duplicated by modern royal women, not the least of which the current Princess of Wales—was a fan of the pink gingham print. In addition to wearing a pair of pink gingham trousers in 1986 alongside her son Prince Harry, Diana also wore the print to a service at St. Paul’s Cathedral (her wedding venue!) in 1990. Diana also wore a coatdress by Catherine Walker—her favorite designer, and the designer of Kate’s look to Trooping the Colour on Saturday—and also wore the piece to a visit to St. Alban’s Cathedral in September 1989, one year prior. She wore it again in 1990 on a trip to Germany.

King Charles and Queen Camilla led the Royal Ascot carriage procession today; other royals on hand were Beatrice and her husband Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi, Zara Tindall, Princess Anne, and Sophie, Duchess of Edinburgh. Beatrice didn’t take part in the carriage procession—likely because of space constraints, according to People.
