"Parts of my life, I accept, are going to be public,” Zendaya said in an ELLE interview in 2023. “I can’t not be a person and live my life and love the person I love. But also, I do have control over what I choose to share. It’s about protecting the peace and letting things be your own but also not being afraid to exist...I am navigating it more than ever now.” Shortly after the Golden Globes, a source confirmed that the couple was engaged.

While the couple haven't spoken directly about their engagement, sources told People that "everyone close to them knew an engagement was happening" and that Holland had been interested in proposing for "a while." Holland had actually dropped a small detail while on the Dish podcast in 2024, noting his holiday plans: "I'll be with my girlfriend's family, which will be fun. Where we'll be is a secret..."[Secret] to you guys. I'll know where we're going." Another small clue: in November 2024, the couple got tiny matching tattoos in Boston together: Zendaya got a small "t" under her armpit, and Holland got a “z” at the top of his ribcage.

Holland apparently asked for her father's blessing months before proposing, but the actual engagement reportedly happened at one of Zendaya's homes between Christmas and New Year's Day, in a moment just between the two of them. There won't be any rush to get married, though: both stars are slated to star in multiple projects. "They will just enjoy things for now and won't rush a wedding," says a source who spoke to People.

The Engagement Ring's Unique Design

Shortly after the engagement was confirmed, more reported details about the ring emerged: it was designed by London-based jeweler Jessica McCormack, and a similar version is actually available for sale (price not listed, but jewelry experts estimate that it looks to be around five carats and worth an estimated $150,000). As reported by Page Six, internet sleuths discovered that Zendaya had "liked" an Instagram post the jeweler had made all the way back in 2022 featuring an east-west ring.

The actual ring design is a bezel-set east-west diamond on a thin gold band. If you're not familiar with east-west, the diamond is set perpendicular to the finger instead of parallel to it (which is the more common setting). The style is one of Jessica McCormack's signatures, and the designer is beloved by celebrities including Saoirse Ronan and Zoë Kravitz. The setting works particularly well for bigger, heavier diamonds; it stands out as looking modern and unusual, which tracks with Zendaya's aesthetic.

Experts predict that east-west orientations will be the defining engagement ring style of 2025, thanks to Zendaya. "East-west settings were popular in the Art Deco era and were very hard to find in the modern market until the past five years or so," gemologist Olivia Landau told Vogue. "Zendaya’s engagement ring will definitely reignite the east-west trend."

Shortly after the Golden Globes, Zendaya appeared at a special screening of Challengers dressed more casually, in a fitted leather jacket. She let the ring be the focal point of her look, adding some simple diamond studs. It looked soft and elegant, the perfect contrast to her sleek outfit.

Zendaya also appeared at the 2025 Met Gala on May 25 wearing her engagement ring. As befitting the glamorous event, she wore a more formal, upscale outfit: a Louis Vuitton suit designed by Pharrell Williams with a matching wide-brimmed hat. Her non-engagement ring jewelry was by Bvlgari, including a subtle brooch on a back seam below the suit collar.
