Michael Polansky proposed to Lady Gaga in 2024 with two rings.

The Gist
- Lady Gaga confirmed her engagement to her longtime partner Michael Polansky in July 2024.
- Polansky proposed on April 1, 2024, first with a resin ring featuring a blade of grass, a reference to a moment they'd shared earlier in their relationship.
- He later gave Gaga a custom ring featuring a 10-carat diamond, plus pink ombré diamonds and a hidden diamond halo.
When Lady Gaga stepped out at the Venice Film Festival in September 2024, all eyes were on her ring finger, where she debuted a dazzling new diamond. The singer first confirmed her engagement to her longtime partner Michael Polansky in July 2024, having kept their happy news private for months. But as details slowly emerged, it became clear that Gaga’s journey to saying “yes” involved more than just a stunning diamond ring–it began with a gesture rooted in simplicity, sentiment, and symbolism.

Polansky first proposed with a blade of grass.
Polansky proposed to Gaga on April 1st while the couple went out on a rock climbing trip. “He said, ‘Would it be OK if I asked you to marry me?” Gaga recalled on The Jimmy Kimmel Show. “I said, ‘Yes! It’s so OK!’” Contrary to tradition, Polanky did not propose with a diamond ring. Instead, he used a blade of grass–a reference to a private moment the couple had shared earlier in their relationship.
In an interview with E! News, Gaga revealed that she had once told Polansky that if he ever proposed, he could simply wrap a blade of grass from their backyard around her finger. He honored that request when the moment finally arrived, presenting her with a ring featuring a blade of grass set in resin. Although she now wears a more prominent diamond ring, Gaga continues to wear a green ring as a tribute to the intimate moment she and Polanksy shared during the proposal. “He got me two rings and one of them was the blade of grass and that’s the first one he proposed with,” Gaga said on a March 2025 episode of the Howard Stern Show. “I love them both."

Following the proposal, Polanksy presented Gaga with a custom engagement ring. According to Page Six, the shiner is estimated to be worth between $500,000 and $2 million, depending on the center stone's carat size. Experts told the outlet that the oval-cut diamond looks to be around 10 carats, but could be as large as 20 carats.
The piece features a large oval-cut diamond, set in 18-karat white and rose gold. The pavé band is accented with natural pink ombré diamonds, and the center stone is surrounded by a hidden white diamond halo, according to People. The ring was initially designed by Sofia Jewelry, a boutique jewelry studio in Mil Valley, California.
Gaga debuted the ring publicly in September 2024 at the Venice International Film Festival, where she attended the premiere of Joker: Folie á Deux. She wore the ring again during red carpet appearances, including at the 2025 Grammy Awards.
Gaga's song "Blade of Grass" was partly inspired by the engagement.
The blade of grass proposal was also the inspiration behind “Blade of Grass,” a track on Gaga’s 2025 album Mayhem. Co-written with Polanky, the song reflects on their engagement and emotional journey as a couple. During a Spotify-hosted press event in February 2025, the songwriter explained that the backyard holds a personal significance, as it was also the site of a close friend’s wedding and, later, her passing.
“There was so much loss in that backyard and in my life,” she said. “You know those places that are your happy place but also your sad place?” Gaga said.
The proposal and song became a way for Gaga to reflect on love, grief, and healing. She described the songwriting process with Polansky as meaningful, adding, “It was a very special moment. When we were writing the bridge, I said ‘I’ll give you something, but it's no diamond ring’. And he said, ‘The air that I’m breathing.’”
