FA rules stipulate the Chelsea star could be banned for up to four years after providing a positive ‘A’ sample for performance-enhancing substance meldonium last year.

The Ukraine international has now been formally charged by the FA.

An FA spokesperson said: ‘We can confirm that Mykhailo Mudryk has been charged with Anti-Doping Rule Violations alleging the presence and/or use of a prohibited substance, in terms of Regulations 3 and 4 of The FA’s Anti-Doping Regulations. As this is an ongoing case, we are not in a position to comment further at this time.’

Mudryk has denied knowingly taking any banned substances, explaining in a statement last November he was in ‘complete shock’ having ‘not done anything wrong’.

‘I can confirm that I have been notified that a sample I provided to The FA contained a banned substance,’ the Ukraine international said last year.

‘This has come as a complete shock as I have never knowingly used any banned substances or broken any rules, and am working closely with my team to investigate how this could have happened.

‘I know that I have not done anything wrong and remain hopeful that I will be back on the pitch soon. I cannot say any more now due to the confidentiality of the process, but I will as soon as I can.’

His last appearance for the Blues came in late November when he scored in a 2-0 win over Heidenheim in the Europa Conference League.

The winger travelled to Poland to watch his team play Betis in the final of the competition last month, a move his manager Enzo Maresca was in the dark over.

Some of sports biggest names have faced sanctions for taking meldonium, notably tennis star Maria Sharapova who received a two year ban which was later reduced to 15 months.

Paul Pogba failed a doping test after elevated levels of testosterone were found in his system being tested following Juventus’ opening game of the 2023-24 season.

He later received a four-year ban which wad reduced to 18 months after an appeal with the former Manchester United star now free to return to the game.

The Daily Telegraph report Mudryk has hired Morgan Sports Law to lead his case – the same group which represented Pogba in his appeal
