Why American adults are ordering from kids' menu

Nearly half of US adults say they regularly order food from kids' menu when eating out. Experts say the trend reflects a mix of practical and financial considerations.

'Adults are likely drawn to kids meals for two reasons,' retail expert Neil Saunders of GlobalData told Daily Mail. 'One is to save money, since kids meals are often cheaper.

The other is to get a smaller portion, as some adult meals can be oversized.' Smaller portions, simpler menu options, and lower prices make kids’ meals especially appealing as dining out becomes more expensive..

Lightspeed, the company that commissioned the survey, noted that familiarity and simplicity are also factors. 'Whether it's a mini burger or mac and cheese, the kids' menu is becoming a smart option — not just a nostalgic one,' Lightspeed researchers said.

The Consumer Price Index shows the cost of eating at restaurants has risen 3.9 percent over the past year. Restaurants have noticed, and some are deliberately catering to adult diners who prefer kid-sized portions.

Chains like McDonald’s have leaned into the trend, offering limited-time adult Happy Meals featuring retro collectibles and smaller portions of classic menu items.

The latest adult Happy Meal released this month celebrates the golden age of McDonaldland . The limited-time meal comes with the choice between a Quarter Pounder with Cheese or 10-piece Chicken McNuggets, plus fries — all with collectible tins featuring retro designs and extras like stickers and postcards.

The strategy has helped the company bounce back from earlier sales slumps , appealing to adults who want a simple, budget-friendly meal without judgment.
