Former Liverpool manager, Jurgen Klopp, who signed Jota for the club has given his reaction on Instagram saying he is ‘heartbroken’ over the death of his ‘great friend’.

Jota's teammates pay tribute

Plenty of Diogo Jota’s teammates have reacted to the news of his death on social media.

Portugal midfielder, Ruben Neves, said: “They say we only lose people when we forget them. I will never forget you."

Defender Diogo Dalot added the news was ‘devastating’ and he is ‘speechless’.

He also sent ‘strength’ to Jota’s family and his thoughts were echoed by midfielder Pedro Goncalves who wrote: "My deepest condolences to the family."

Diogo Jota's career timeline

Jota began his career with Portuguese side Pacos de Ferreira and joined Atletico Madrid in 2016.

He was sent out on loan to Porto and Wolves helping to win the latter promotion to the Premier League in 2018.

He thrived with the West Midlands club and secured a £41m move to Liverpool in 2020.

During five seasons at Anfield, Jota scored 65 goals in 182 appearances and his honours include one FA Cup, two EFL Cup winners medals and a Premier League title.

On the international scene, Jota scored 14 goals in 49 appearances for Portugal.

Liverpool forward Darwin Nunez played alongside Diogo Jota for three seasons posted a tribute on Instagram.

He says there are ‘no words’ to provide comfort for the pain of losing his friend and colleague and that he will ‘always remember’ Jota’s smile.

"There are no words of comfort for so much pain,” Nunez wrote.

"I will always remember you with your smile, as a good companion on and off the field.

"I send all my strength to his family, from where he is I'm sure he will always be with you, especially his wife and three children.

"May he rest in peace. Diogo and Andre."

Diogo Jota: The fan favourite who achieved more than he ever dreamed possible

The caption is more poignant now, even as the words have proved horribly wrong. “Yes to forever,” wrote Diogo Jota, accompanying social-media pictures of his wedding to his long-time partner Rute Cardoso. Within two weeks, Jota’s forever had ended, the Liverpool and Portugal forward killed in a car crash in Spain, along with his brother Andre Silva. His new wife is already a widow, his three young children left without a father.

“It doesn’t make any sense,” said Cristiano Ronaldo, his Portugal captain. There is a feeling of shock whenever a life is suddenly cruelly cut short, and Jota was just 28. It is still greater when someone has seemed as full of life as Jota did.

Rayner describes Jota's death as 'absolutely heartbreaking' as she visits Anfield

Angela Rayner described the death of Diogo Jota as "absolutely heartbreaking" as she visited Anfield to pay her respects.

The Deputy Prime Minister told broadcasters: "It's heartbreaking. It is absolutely heartbreaking, and just shows how life events can change really quickly.

"You know, I'm absolutely devastated for his wife and his children and his family. I can't imagine what they're going through at the moment. My son's 28 and it just, it's really shocking."

Ms Rayner described Jota as one of Liverpool's "greatest strikers", and said the news was "devastating" for people who had woken up to it on Thursday morning.

Local authorities issue statement on Jota and Silva's deaths

Footballer Diogo Jota and his brother were killed after their car ran off the road and caught fire, local authorities said in a statement.

The Zamora Provincial Council in posted on Facebook that the fatal accident took place on the A-52 in Palacios de Sanabria, in the Spanish province of Zamora, which borders Portugal, at 00.40am.

In a statement, translated from the original Spanish, the authority: "A vehicle ran off the road and caught fire, which spread to the surrounding vegetation.

"The fire was put out by the fire brigade, which worked with health services and the Guardia Civil.

"Unfortunately, medics were only able to confirm the death of two young men, aged 28 and 26.

"From the Zamora Provincial Council and the Provincial Consortium we express our condolences to the families of the victims and thank all those involved for their work."

The Portuguese international had been travelling in the Spanish province of Zamora with his brother Andre Silva, 26, also a professional footballer, when their card left the road in the early hours of Thursday and caught fire. The Spanish Guardia Civil confirmed the deaths of both men in the accident.

Portuguese club, Sporting CP, also posted their condolences after Jota’s death was confirmed.

UK culture secretary pays tribute to Jota

UK culture secretary Lisa Nandy has paid tribute to Liverpool player Diogo Jota who was killed in a car crash in Spain.

She told the Commons: "We just received the heartbreaking news a moment ago before we came in to the chamber that he lost his life at just 28 years of age."

Ms Nandy said the whole House "is heartbroken by this news", adding: "I wanted to send our sympathies to his family on behalf of the whole House."

Shadow culture minister Saqib Bhatti had earlier said: "As we came into the chamber today there was tragic news of the passing of Diogo Jota, the Liverpool footballer, at the age of 28. So can I put our condolences to the friends and families and Liverpool fans across the world on that passing.”

No other vehicles involved in crash

The Spanish civil guard confirmed to The Associated Press that Jota and his brother were found dead after their car went off a road near the western city of Zamora.

Police were investigating the causes and said there were no other vehicles involved.

FC Porto send condolences

Jota and his brother, Andre Silva, came through the youth ranks at Porto and the club have offered their condolences to their family.

The club wrote: “FC Porto is in mourning.

“It is with shock and deep sorrow that we send our heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of Diogo Jota and his brother André Silva, who was also our athlete in the youth ranks.

Spanish Guardia Civil statement

Here is the full statement from the Guardia Civil, given verbally, confirming the deaths of Diogo Jota and his brother, Andre Felipe:

"The information we have so far is that the car, which was a Lamborghini, was in a road traffic accident and left the road due to a tyre blow out while overtaking.

"It was in the early hours, 00:30 BST, in the municipality of Cernadilla in the province of Zamora.

"The car caught on fire and the two occupants were killed.”

The Guardia Civil was asked to confirm the identities of those involved in the accident, the Guardia Civil said: "The player and his brother, Andre Felipe."

Jota married his partner 11 days ago

Adding to the tragedy is the fact that Jota married his wife, Rute Cardoso, just 11 days ago on 22 June 2025.

In a post shared on the couple's social media, the pair wrote: "Yes, forever."

Portuguese Prime Minister Luís Montenegro described Jota's death as "tragic" and extended his condolences to the family.

In a social post on X, he said: "The news of the death of Diogo Jota, an athlete who greatly honored Portugal's name, and his brother is unexpected and tragic.

"I extend my deepest condolences to their family. It is a sad day for football and for national and international sports."

Portguese Football Federation confirm Jota death

Pedro Proenca, head of the Portuguese Football Federation said in a statement: “The Portuguese Football Federation and all of Portuguese football are completely devastated by the deaths of Diogo Jota and André Silva, this morning, in Spain.

“Much more than an amazing player, with almost 50 international caps, Diogo Jota was an extraordinary person, respected by all teammates and opponents, someone with an infectious joy and a reference in the community itself.

“On my behalf, and on behalf of the Portuguese Football Federation, I express my deepest condolences to the family and friends of Diogo and André Silva, as well as Liverpool FC and FC Penafiel, the clubs where, respectively, lined up the players.

“The Portuguese Football Federation has already asked Uefa for a minute's silence, this Thursday, before the match of our national team with Spain, in the women's European Championship.

“We lost to two champions. The death of Diogo and Andre Silva represent irreparable losses for Portuguese football and we will do everything to, daily, honour their legacy.”

Diogo Jota tragically passes away

The Portugal international joined Liverpool from Wolverhampton Wanderers in 2020 and established himself as a key attacker under Jurgen Klopp and latterly Arne Slot, winning the Premier League, FA Cup and League Cup in his five-year spell at Anfield.

Liverpool Football Club have not yet commented on the reports, but Jota’s death was confirmed by Pedro Proenca, head of the Portuguese Football Federation.

Emergency services confirm car crash

Emergency services in the Castilla and Leon region confirmed the crash.

“The 1-1-2 Castilla y León operations room received several calls reporting a vehicle accident at Km. 65 of the A-52, in the municipality of Cernadilla, Zamora. A car was reported to have been involved in an accident and the vehicle was on fire,” their statement read.
