Liverpool players were amongst those to attend the funeral of Diogo Jota and his brother Andre Silva, before police were called to intervene after fans took pictures of the grave.

The 28-year-old and his brother were killed in the early hours of Thursday morning when their Lamborghini crashed in Zamora, northwestern Spain.

A wake for the brothers took place on Friday before the funeral this morning at the Igreja Matriz de Gondomar church, approximately 16km in-land from Porto in their hometown of Gondomar.

A delegation of Liverpool players and staff were pictured arriving at the church with Virgil van Dijk and Andy Robertson carrying wreaths for their teammate.

Darwin Nunez was also in attendance along with former Liverpool teammates Thiago Alcantara and Fabinho.

Manchester City’s Bernardo Silva and Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes were also among the large Portugal national team continent paying their respects, joining Diogo and Andre’s family inside the church.

Two coffins arrived at the church just after 10am for the start of the funeral mass.

Shortly after the emotional funeral, the brothers’ graveside opened up to allow members of the public to pay their respects.

However, police had to swoop in quickly afterwards when hoards of mourners began to take pictures beside their burial site, with some even pointing phones at the headstone display.

‘Team mates come and go but not like this. It’s going to be extremely difficult to accept that Diogo won’t be there when we go back.

Bernardo Silva: Jota a great friend to all of us

For years, Bernardo Silva and Jota were on opposing sides as Manchester City and Liverpool battled for Premier League supremacy.

Away from those match days, the two were close friends with Silva delivering a glowing tribute on the morning of the funeral.

‘I can’t even imagine the pain of the family, of Rute, of the children, of the parents. For Andre and for Jota,’ he told AVI.

‘I must say a little about Jota, who was a great friend of all of us. His career, although not the most important, speaks for itself. He didn’t train at any of the big teams and took the most difficult paths. His passion, will and determination allowed him to succeed in life and have a brilliant career.

‘More important than that, as a person… the memories that remain… Jota will always be in our hearts. He will always be present at every breakfast, lunch, dinner, national team get-together, PlayStation or card game.’

Tributes around the world for Jota

Football matches across the world have been marked by a minute’s silence ahead of kick-off in memory of Jota and his brother.

Chelsea winger Pedro Neto and Joao Cancelo and Ruben Neves of Al-Hilal are competing in the Club World Cup matches in the United States, fighting through tears as they remembered their Portugal teammate.

Portugal’s opening match of the women’s European Championship also struck a poignant tone with players linking arms in silence.

Away from football, Oasis kicked off their reunion tour in Cardiff on Friday night with an image of Jota displayed during their hit song Live Forever.
