Princess Kate Slips Into Princess Diana’s Lover’s Knot Tiara for a State Banquet

Princess Catherine is back in a tiara. The Princess of Wales was a vision in a red Givenchy gown and the magnificent Lover’s Knot tiara for a state banquet honoring French president Emmanuel Macron and his wife, Brigitte.

Kate’s gown for the evening was a sweeping floor-length creation with a flowing cape silhouette that was designed by Sarah Burton for Givenchy. It was belted at the waist, and Kate wore it with a matching crimson clutch, black pointed-toe pumps, and her royal sash.

Kate upped the ante with layers of diamonds: chandelier earrings, a bracelet, and her diamond-and-pearl Lover’s Knot tiara. The gleaming piece is the one most frequently worn by the princess and was also one of Princess Diana’s favorites. The crown was created for Queen Mary in 1914 by the House of Garrard from jewels already owned by her family, and it was passed down to Queen Elizabeth II, Diana, and now Kate.

Prince William was dapper in a navy tuxedo, white bow tie, and his military honors for the banquet.

“Ready for what promises to be a wonderful State Banquet this evening in Windsor 🇫🇷🇬🇧,” Kate and William wrote on Instagram today alongside a photo of them in their coordinating banquet ensembles.

The official dinner kicks off the three-day visit from the Macrons—the first state visit made by France to the United Kingdom in 17 years. The president and his first lady are staying at Windsor Castle, hosted by King Charles III and Queen Camilla.

Charles, Camilla, William, and Kate welcomed the Macrons to the U.K. this morning, and Kate even paid tribute to French fashion by wearing a modern version of Dior’s New Look in a pastel blush.
